My Research Blog 2: Plants

Doing a little research on plants today and here is what I've got By looking at the Live Plant Data Base sticky

Hibiscus rosa-sinensis- need full sun and are best outdoors; therefore not on my list.

Codiaeum Variegatum, Ficus Elastica (rubber tree), and Schefflera Actinophylla- are toxic if ate; therefore also not on my list.

Ficus Benjamina- can't be soaked in water, do well in bright indirect light and at 70-85 degrees. They have a sap that become an irritant if ate and cause problems with the eyes and mouth; therefore they are a maybe- BUT will not be on my list because I do not want to risk it.

Schefflera Arboricola (Dwarf Schefflera)- does well in humidity and at 65-85 degrees but if a chameleon eats a lot of it can be toxic/become sick; therefore they are a maybe.

Epipremnum Aureum (pothos)- best in filtered light, indoors, and at 60-85 degrees but they are toxic when ate in a large quantity; therefore they are a maybe.

Dracaena Fragrans (corn plant)- best in indirect light, indoors, at 60-80 degrees, and does well with high humidity; therefore they are on my list.

Dracaena Deremensis- is related to Dracaena Fragrans, does well in the same areas; therefore they are on my list.

Now where to find these plants and how much. Here are two places I found information on. I am sure there are more, however I have not looked in the right places yet. Cottage Flowers, Inc. and Home Depot

The Maybe
Ficus Benjamina: $20, $35, $50, $75
Cottage Flowers
Home Depot didn’t have a Ficus Benjamina- but is this Ficus the same?

Schefflera Arboricola (Dwarf Schefflera): $17, $20, $35, $50, $75
Cottage Flowers
Home Depot and here is one that just says Scheffleia is that the same?

Epipremnum Aureum (pothos): $17, $15, $20
Home Depot has a lot of different Pothos but none that say Epipremnum Aureum. A hanging Golden Pothos, Golden Pothos, and anotherGolden Pothos.

The Yes
Dracaena Fragrans (corn plant): $35, $50, $75
Cottage Flowers

Dracaena Deremensis: $35, $50, $75
Cottage Flowers

Please comment if you know of any other places that will have these plants and if there are any Safe plants that I have missed.

THANK YOU!

Nice research. However we use hibiscus in all our indoor enclosures and they do great. I'm no expert on plants, but my thought are the UVB and UVA light spectrums from the lighting needs of the chameleon supplement the plants needs of sun light. Not sure on that, it's just a thought, but ours do great, and the Chameleon's seem to really dig them, especially our Veiled Chams, they really enjoy snacking on them.

I forgot about the lighting.. that is a good point. I thought they would do great but didn't know how easy they were to keep alive indoors.

I will keep that in mind and give them a try!

I should elaborate a little more, we do switch the Hibiscus plants out between our outdoor and indoor enclosures, this may be why we haven't had a problem. We do this to clean the plants off from our indoor enclosures, it's quite possible there exposure to the UVB and UVA have nothing to do with the plants health. I have read on other threads about people using plant supplement lighting, I honestly know nothing about it, or the effects of this type of lighting on our chams.
