Dry Gutload Recipe, January 2010

Using the right mix of dry and wet (fruit and veg) items for your gutload helps ensure your chameleon gets the nutrients it needs to be healthy.

I make a new batch of dry gutload several times a year, each time the recipe is a bit different. These are the ingredients used in the January 2011 batch. I use a coffee bean grinder to blend it all together to a fine meal.

3 cups alfalfa (protein, vitamins including K)
1/4 cup sunflower seeds (B vitamins, folate, potasium, etc)
1/4 cup powdered kelp (idodine, calcium, magnesium)
1/4 cup hemp seed (Essential Fatty Acids, essential amino acids, protein, fibre)
1/4 cup sesame seed (iron, copper, magnesium, maganese, selenium)
1/4 cup pumpkin and squash seeds (Protein, Vitamin K, Iron, Copper, Magnesium)
1/4 cup dried cranberries (sweetness, antioxidants)
1/4 cup granola
5 tablespoons bee pollen
5 table spoons spirulina
5 tablespoons of brewers yeast (B vitmains including folic acid, chromium, selenium)
4 tablespoons blanched almonds (potasium, b vitamins)
3 tablespoons organic dried coconut (yummy, counteracts goitrogenic effect of millet)
2 sheets of roasted seaweed (as used for sushi)
2 garry oak tree leafs (dead and dry) (tanins)
1 tablespoon millet (fiber, niacin, thiamin, riboflavin, lecithin, iron, magnesium)
dash of garlic (B6, possible medicinal benefits)
dash of poppy seeds (calcium)
dash of ginger powder (Vitamin E, B6, Iron, Magnesium, Potassium, Selenium, and Manganese)

i am always trying todo the best for my cham and i think i will try this.. thanks alot

Note: the dried alfalfa I used does not contain any additives. Its just dried alfalfa pressed into blocks. Be aware that rabbit and guniea pig pellets do contain other ingredients, some of which you may not be wanting to add to your gutload.

those tbls measurments, are they heaping or leveled? and as far as the millet seeds go, can i use the kind that comes prebagged that i use for my cockatiels that i buy at petland discounts?

Hi
Doesnt matter if the tablesoons are heaping or level. The measurements need not be exact. In fact, feel free to triple the amounts used of the best things, like the kelp powder, the spirulina, the bee pollen. You could even triple the millet amount, no worries.
Yes, millet like you feed to birds is perfect. In many countries people eat a lot of millet, but oddly in North America we tend to feed it just to the birds. :)

I LOVE all your information about gutloading!!

I got a bunch of stuff to make my own dry gutload and was wondering on a couple of items. I would be using this main dry recipe but got some Red Meca and Flax seed and was wondering if it would go well in this gutload and if so in what proportion?

thanks again for all your help!!

I dont know anything about Red Meca (what is it?). Use flax in moderation - like most seeds it is high in phosphorous, so while it does provide useful nutrients also you'll want to limit its use. You could reduce the amount of sesame and pumpkin seeds and replace that portion with flax.

Very nice, i am going to try this, it seems to have all the essential vitamins and minerals, i am going to recuce the calcium foods a tiny bit. The good commercial gutloads like rapashy superload, are so expensive, this should be nice to try out

The dried coconut that you use...is that desicated coconut, like you might use to bake a cake? I have used grated fresh coconut and did consider using coconut oil(but you said that wasnt good for some reason) I don't know what you mean by dried cocnut. I have also looked for coconut flour (because it is supposed to be a healthier option in human cooking in place of wheat flour, but nobody stocks it) Is this what you use?

I used up some desicated/dehydrated shredded coconut that I had on hand. It is not an important ingredient, if you dont happen to have any.

Fresh coconut would okay to add to your wet gutload on occassion.
