Build Log : 2 : Design

Hey It's me again about 30 seconds after I posted the first Blog. Time to get in to the hard part. The design.

I'm putting this enclosure in the corner of a room, next to a tall dresser 2 and a half feet deep. The roof is 9 feet from the floor, but it has a 45 degree slant from the wall to the ceiling after 7 ft up the wall. What I'm saying is no matter how much I want to I can't make it taller than 7 ft. This made the dimensions easy to figure out. The dimensions are 3' wide x 2 1/2' Deep x 4 1/2' Tall.

I went to work designing it in Google Sketch up, where all of my woodworking projects start. It's Free It's Amazing Download it!

Here is my rough design. Just so you know it's a weird format so If you don't have Google Sketch up you'll have to stick to the description and .jpgs.

I live in Montana, and It gets Cold during the winter, and it's always dry, for this reason I'm making a part glass enclosure. I know don't use glass, I'm horrible. I think it would be much worse to turn my chameleon into an Dried out Ice pop, so part Glass it is.

The Cage it self will sit on a 2' tall cabinet. This will house the mist king crickets silkworms and drainage system, as well as his supplements.

On top of the Cage will be 6" section that will hide my lights from sight with a front door that folds down and no roof.

The top will be screen, and I'm going to have a 3 in" Screen section going all the way around the enclosure about 3 in from the bottom, leaving room for substrate and drainage. What's that you say substrate makes me evil as well, fear not, I live on a river, and I'm covering the substrate with a screen and river rocks. I'm only putting substrate in so I can fully plant my enclosure, my Dax will not be able to eat it. I'm also making two inserts screen that will go on one side and the front. This way during the Summer months I can have two screen walls, and during the winter I can replace them with the Glass. This is not shown in my rough design.

The floor will have a slight slope going to the middle, There will be a 3" screened hole in the center, with a funnel going into a drainage bucket.

I'm going to try and upload some .jpg's soon. probably on my next blog

looking forward to hearing more. Hope you add a few jpgs

I'm looking forward to building, I start construction Wednesday, I've got the majority of the materials. I just need the Mist King and varnish and the Door handles, which can all wait till the end of the build. I added a jpg to my most recent blog.
