It depends on how far away the bug is. If they miss, then you should be concerned. I believe they can extend their tongues up to twice their body length.

Hand feeding is the best way to gain trust but this could take weeks and possibly months. It's not something that happens overnight.

They are not meaning to be rude, they only want to know what is wrong. To try and help you understand, the first picture is of your chameleon's mouth, the second is of a different chameleon with a healthy mouth. It is perfectly closed and even. I hope this helps.
