The tails often get pinched and then that portion dies off…but gangrene can set in and cause more problems.
A poor shed can also lead to this problem. There are other causes as well.
Best to see a good chameleon vet.
I’d want to take them both. It’s always sad to see them in most pet stores…but buying them just encourages the store to get more. And yet the other option is that if they remain there and languish and the store can’t profit by it so they stop..but that breaks my heart to know that it will suffer...
Can you post one of the back right leg please. I need to see the chameleon more from the side….more like this…

@MzLaurie said…”I think anesthesia is extreme at this point ”…it would be needed so that the area could be cleaned out so the chameleon wouldn’t feel the pain of it being cleaned out if it’s an infection.
If there is pus involved, the area will need to be cleaned out and flushed with the chameleon under anesthetic. A culture and sensitivity test will be needed to determine the bacteria involved so it can be put on the appropriate antibiotics.
I’d be more concerned about the branches he would hit on the way down to the floor injuring him than what was on the floor. The chameleons can fall in the wild intentionally or accidentally and survive…so I don’t think there’s a lot to worry about generally.
Sorry…I can’t read that writing form.
I had it translated…hopefully this is what it said…
“The separated female was already in estrus and did not reject the male, but the male did not nod at the female and was completely uninterested.”
So you know the colouration for the female when she’s...
“ Our results confirm the finding of a similar study in dry-forest habitat on Maui that Jackson’s chame- leons are likely to pose a substantial threat to a broad range of native invertebrate biodiversity in Hawai‘i…

I hope everyone is staying safe too.
So glad I live in Ontario, Canada where we don’t have many horrible hurricanes. The worst one i lived through here, was Hurricane Hazel....and I was very young, but I still remember how bad it was. Lots of flooding, rain and high winds.
Can you please post another photo of the female from the side…she looks like she might not be receptive. How does she react to the male? You aren’t keeping them in the same cage, are you?
You said you study bibrroni agama...there are thought to be two Clades…do you study both?
You said you study tetsudo graeca marokensiss…are they bigger or smaller than hermanni? Similar in their lives?
