Up front - this is not much about chameleons, more of a story (a.k.a. rant) related personal experience about how I now view pet stores and decide which ones to give my business:
About 6 months ago my daughter decided she wanted to volunteer at a local pet shelter. Figuring this was one of...
Got one of these a few years ago and love it. Found it great keeping a variety of light sources in one fixture. Bought mine from LLLReptiles (site sponsor) Some answers to your questions below; they could also probably help getting you specs for maximum watts and size configurations:
Do all...
The climate you're in will be the variable with the most influence over humidity -the temperature gradient between indoors and outdoors will have a huge affect. The appropriate humidity range will depend on the genus of chameleon.
I'm in Chicago and during the winter indoor relative...
Tap vs. filtered/bottled water will spark debate.
For the vast majority of cases tap water is fine unless it is from a source that would contain abnormally high levels of contaminants (such as well water near a farm that uses insecticides).
I just have the Walgreens humidifier Djturna mentioned. Simply on a shelf near the enclosure positioned so the mist falls into the top of the screen (see below). Have it set on a timer to run for 12 hours then off for 12 hours to allow things to dry out. Have had this set up for years and it...
I've been able to maintain a basking temp range between 80-85 degrees with a 75w and 100w bulb; just by adjusting the distance between the basking spot & the heat source. Appears you've done the same and got this dialed in. The lower part of my cage is in the mid-60s and my cham has been...
Let the RH fluctuate a bit. Elevated RH sustained for a long period of time can cause microbial growth. 35 - 40%% is really not all that low; especially if the heat is on in your house. I have my humidifier on the same timer as my lights so humidity drops overnight and allows the enclosure to...
Digital thermometers work well and most are relatively accurate.
Digital hygrometers are not as accurate as many people think. Although the digitals are much better than the analog. Use it as a tool to give you a ball park estimate but don't be suprised if it is off 5 or 10% (even more in...
I use the exact same humidifier - simply have it on a shelf next to the enclosure and have it directed so the mist falls into through the top (same as yours). I've been using this setup for about 3 years and its been fine. Have the humidifier on the same timer as the lights so it operates...
I'm no expert but my cham has never had very good aim. Often tries for a cricket that is too far away or barely misses. This has been going on for almost 2 years and he is healthy. Never thought much of it.
Be curious to hear others responses.
My next door neighbor's kid returned from college then moved on leaving him with a 7 year old ball python. 4 foot long female. He is trying to give it away and my daughter wants it...which means dad is gonna have to take care of it. Have done some research and it appears these are fairly easy...
This afternoon my 12 yr old daughter is setting up a lemonade stand with her friends - I notice the sign says "Girl Scout Cookies 2 for 25 cents". I ask them to count how many are in the box...25. How much did the box cost...$4. Math problem - how much are you loosing per cookie? Answer...
Years ago was in the Peace Corps, found myself in an area with no running water/toilets. Just a hole in the ground with plywood on three sides for at least some perception of privacy. Was squating (being a male that's needed for #2 when all you have is a hole in the dirt). Had mastered the...
48 hours sounds about right if its in a relatively well ventilated area, temps are not too cold (>65 degrees) and relative humidity is not too high (about <80% rh).
Just out of curiousity - was it a two part coating - came in two tubes that you mixed together before applying?
