Simple setups > all out setups

Could it be that chams in pet stores see many more people, more frequently and just become accostomed to it? Or maybe other factors; diet, genetics, supplentation, etc? Just playing devil's advocate.

do you breed chameleons in illinois????

Julie (chams1 on this site) is a breeder in Bolingbrook. I havent been to the show in a couple years but she has been there in the past. Really knows her stuff and has gorgeous chams. Her booth used to be "Chamo Wear"

    Correct Enclosure and Humidity?

I don't see any problems misting the cage with well water (others might point out trace levels of chemicals but in my opinion that's nothing to worry about). The problem with the waterfall is it never dries out and funky stuff can grow.

    Correct Enclosure and Humidity?

Good choice and really glad you came to these forums. I've learned quite a bit here over the past couple years and my cham is happy because of it. Would also consider getting a digital humidity monitor. Not all that expensive (can find them for 15 dollars or less at most hardware stores)...

    Correct Enclosure and Humidity?

What relative humidity level are you at now? Basking and lower in the enclosure? You would need to do more than change the water every few days. A biofilm can develop on surfaces in the waterfall & resevior for the water fall. Bacteria can grow in the biofilm then migrate into the water...

Should I? Opinions needed to help rationalize.

I have been somewhat proud of my ability to avoid temptation and get more than one cham but the stars may have aligned. My wife is, for the most part, not a fan of critters. Over the years my daughter and I have talked her into allowing a cham, 2 cats and a hamster. Most comments about...

    Nice job! I want one.

Why is it bad to mist at night?

An enclosure is not the same as the natural habitat. Different nutrient sources for microbial growth (different species of wood & leaves, plastics, soil composition, etc.). The biodiversity of microbes is going to be different regardless of moisture availability. I'm unaware of any studies...

    Any Central IL cham owners??

More info in this thread: https://www.chameleonforums.com/whos-going-tinley-park-narbc-76027/ NARBC site: http://narbc.com/ "Wheaton Show" site: http://www.allanimalexpo.com/

    Any Central IL cham owners??

Julie (chams1 on this site) is from Bolingbrook - not too bad a drive. She used to breed chams and had some very nice ones at NARBC and sometimes at the Wheaton show. Have not heard from her in a while so am unsure what she might have available now. Perhaps try shooting her a PM. Might be...

Warm mist or cool mist humidifier?

Cool mist is more of a hazard for humans; humidifier fever, pontiac fever, legionaires disease, hypersensitivity pneumonitis are just a few of the potential outcomes caused from microbial growth in evaporative humidifying/cooling systems. The statement that warm mist is essentially steam is...

Why is it bad to mist at night?

One reason is to let things dry out a bit. High moisture content sustained over a period of time (approximately 48 hours or longer) can result in bacteria and/or mold growth. \

General setup: I really like the combo light fixture from LLL Reptiles. Have a 75w basking bulb, UVB and two 6500k plant lights all in one unit:

Warm mist or cool mist humidifier?

Both types would work fine but neither is perfect. Understand the concerns with both then decide which risk is easiest for you to control. If you're in a relatively small room and there is no forced air ventilation that recirculates air throughout the home then a "warm mist" humidifier might...

    Keeping Humidity high enough

If your basking spot is 80 degrees and 20% rh then the lower part of your enclosure is probably around 30% rh (if temps are about 68 degrees). I'm not an expert on Jacksons but probably need to bump that up a bit. I'd cover a side or two as others have suggested then, if you don't have one...

    Keeping Humidity high enough

As gratefulj indicated; enclosing a side or two with non-porous material (cut shower curtain, foam board, etc.) would help. Plants also help. What is the temp up high? Relative humidity is going to be much lower at higher temps when compared to lower temps even if the quantity of moisture in...

    Too much water?

Just be sure to allow some "dry time". Too much moisture for too long can cause mold/bacterial growth. As a general rule of thumb; surfaces should not stay wet for more than 48 hours.

    Forum Addiction

Funny - I managed to get my chameleon fix with just 1; no plans to get more. But this forum......been lurking on it for a couple years now and can't kick the habbit.

    3 month old died

There are hundreds of formulations. Most are relatively safe (for humans); some are not. Can't say with any certainty without knowing the product & manufactuer. Don't call yourself stupid or blame yourself! I investigate chemical exposures for a living - so natrually that's where my...

    3 month old died

There are many types of hot glues with wide range of chemical compositions. Thought was that the cricket keeper not having much ventilation and some possible byproducts being heavier than air could result in localized accumulation. Again - this is just a wild ass guess on my part; can't...
