You can either spend $200 plus on a meter or you can follow the recommended replacement schedule of the manufacturer of the lamp you’re using. Depending on the lighting type you’re using it may be worthwhile to get the meter, but in most cases you’re probably better off just replacing the lamp...
Mine does the same. They love to get out of the cage, despite all the hard work you put into making it perfect for them, to explore the world. Beman is picking up beautiful colors. He looks a lot like our Rio!
Let's dispel one myth. Super worms cannot "eat their way out" of chameleon or any other reptile. Digestive acids in the stomach immediately begin to break down the worm, even if the pray was swallowed whole. These animals evolved to eat small critters. They can break down hard skeleton and even...
I don't know if it's a defense mechanism because I haven't really looked into it much, but they do spray this horrible brown spray. It does't really smell. It's just gross.
Yes, she is too small. I agree. Play it safe. They do grow wicket fast, so if you let the worms become moths, she will be big enough to eat them by the time. The moths are kind of gross though, I agree. They spray. Yuck.
How big is your Vailed?
Here's ours eating a good size hornworm as part of his taming session. He's eaten ones twice the size and has for a while. Of course, if you don't feel comfortable or believe there is a risk, don't feed them. They are quite capable though.
Hornworms are 80% moisture and are soft-bodied. They pose minimal risk of choking in my opinion, if any. I feed our vailed full grown hornworms and he has no problems chowing it down. Use common sense, but remember they also have some sense in sizing up the pray. Again, it all depends on the age...
Got it. You could consider misting more often during summer time. One way to create a cool mist would be to place some ice in the bucket of the misting system, if you're using one. A small fan to move the air around would cool things down even more.
Reducing heat output from the basking bulb...
I believe they have been vastly improved over the years and should be much more reliable. They come with a warranty as well, so I am not sure why anyone would hesitate to buy one if they like it. I have one and it's fine. The nozzles are not very good, but I replacement already.
They seem to love to explore outside of the enclosure. Ours certainly enjoys his free range time. Sounds like yours is showing signs of stress. Does she have plenty of places to hide? It's best to leave them inside for the first few days. Let her acclimate to her surrounding. Chameleons are not...
You my dear friend no longer have a hobby. You have a zoo. We have a dog and a cat plus a vailed chameleon and a bearded dragon. I would so get another reptile, but at that point I am told I'll live in the garage with them, according to my wife.
...then again, it is a nice garage!
