I would directly mist at him yes, I do that with mine as well, but not close to him. Give a good distance from the bottle and your chameleon. You don't want to scare him more then he probably will be. Some chameleons hate it but they need it for there own good! Warm water yes :) it will also...

This looks like the same case I had with my chameleon Calcifer! The knowledge I got was that it was most likely he got some of his shed in his eye while he was still shedding. So I was advised to mist for longer and more frequent and it eventually worked itself out. I even mentioned it to my vet...

I took Calcifer too the vet the other day and I was talking to her about what happens when a chameleon turns black and she says they will usually turn black right before they die.... I am sorry for your loss. </3 :(

I never seen a chameleon get all black or almost black? You have a picture you can upload? All I know from research is that they are stressed/scared or mad when they get the black dots/stripes. And usually if you put them back in the cage and don't bother they disappear fairly quickly. What watt...
