I didn't specifically say anything about escapes. I was describing them to him and his immediate reaction was "tiny insects = infestation." He's already not thrilled that I keep crickets lol
Awesome :-) so I just told my roommate my idea of doing a bioactive cage and he's REALLY not thrilled about the isopods due to the risks of escapes. Will earthworms serve the same purpose as the isopods? What can I tell him to curb his fears?
Either way I'm gonna have to seal the edge, right? Those isopods look pretty small. Also, with isopods, are they pretty self-regulating population-wise? Right now my biggest fear with a bioactive cage is the isopods population growing out of control, making them harder to contain, and increasing...
I think it's called RDF. it's some sort of thing plastic that they use in bathrooms. It's got kind of a rough side and a smooth side.
Right now he's a screen climber, but that could be cause he doesn't have a ton of stuff to climb on in his current cage.
As for the cage, should I build it into...
I found some stuff called RDF that I think I'll use to line the substrate bin, which I'll make out of MDF. For the cage itself I was just going to make it out of screen door framing. Idk exactly what it's called. What recommendations do you have for the screen? Attached is what I found at Home...
I was wondering the same thing about the PVC. I've never worked with it before so I honestly don't know. Maybe I'll make a flat bin with a lip to support the PVC.
Ah ok. I'm thinking of making the bottom of the substrate concaved PVC with a hole and some sort of "strainer" (to keep everything from just washing out) at the bottom. About an foot of vertical space from the top of the slant sounds reasonable. (So, say I slant it down two inches, total height...
Ah! My apologies! I misunderstood what you said. Thanks for all the great information and advice! On a side note: time for me to get creative lol. Just called about a 30x30x60 cage I was going to order from DIY cages and they are discontinuing that one. So I'm gonna have to go with the 30x30x72...
I was actually thinking of doing it the other way. PVC panels backed by MDF for support. I figure that way I have to worry less about the wood rotting. So silicone should make for a strong bond between sheets of PVC? Also, I tried googling isopods cause I had no idea what they even were. What...
I've seen what you said you're going to seal your substrate tray with, but what are you building it out of? For mine I'm going to have to build or buy something that the cage can sit inside of. I was thinking PVC but idk what I would use to bond the sides together to get a perfect seal.
That's why I was wondering, cause the standard ceiling height is 7 feet and 78 inches is already 6.5 feet. Made me wonder how tall the stand was and how you were gonna fit lights on top lol
So, again forgive me if this is a dumb question, that's different than having a potted plant? Is it where the whole bottom acts as the "pot"? Also, I see many pros to what you're describing. What're the cons? That link would be helpful, thanks!
As I'm preparing to order Kronin a new cage, I've been putting much more thought into the design. In my research I've come across the term "bioactive" a lot. Can someone explain to me exactly what that means and how it's executed? I've heard it helps cut down on mold and mildew. How and why is...
Hey folks! So a while back I had trouble with my plant. Long story short, I recently bought a grow light to help it recover. When I turned it on, I noticed half the bulbs are red and i can't remember: are certain color lights bad for my chameleon's eyes? I've attached pics of the light (sorry...
Thanks!
I know with all the cross-breeding that goes on and especially since I got him from a pet store, it can be virtually impossible to know exactly what locale he is but anyone have any guesses?
Also keep in mind he's only ~6-8 months old.
