I had exactly the same thought originally. Turns out those screen kits aren't as common over here in the UK. The ones I did find weren't cheap either.
I think they would work quite well though. Maybe a bit on the flimsy side?

Just general purpose aluminium (6061). I was more concerned over the toxicity of any bonding adhesive really. But if I go with your approach it won't be an issue now!
