It's wider at the sides, so the handle just acts the same as foliage. If they need shade, they can go directly under the handle, but they are almost never under it. I tested it with my Solar Meter, they are getting the UVB they need.
Hatchlings from the same clutch can hatch at different rates, and some grow MUCH faster than others. You can't leave the big ones with the small ones. Ideally, it is best to keep each one individually to avoid fighting over food and tail nipping, but it isn't often practical to keep them that...
I don't have live plants because when you have many, many adults and babies, you have to manage how your time is spent. I used live plants when I had just a few chameleons, but it becomes very difficult to manage when you have many:)
While at a craft store, I had an Ah-Ha moment. These critter cages are perfect for hatchlings, especially if you want to keep them individually housed. It's all plastic, fruit flies can't get through the fine screen, it has a magnification window, and they are cheap. I have been using them all...
