My cham hermie loves silk worms and I've noticed that he has a pretty good feel for how big of one he can take on. If I give him a really large one he'll refuse to eat it ... but readily gobble up more small ones if offered. I have a beardie that will eat the large silkies as big as I can grow...
For those that have been a while they saw me through the horror that was my male veiled hermie getting MBD, breaking all four legs in at least one spot, having casts on all four legs, a sling on one, and through sheer determination and will on his part making it through, healing and bouncing...
Are you only giving the calcium for a week? I have to say that even if it's only a mild case I doubt that she'll be all better in one week. It takes time to first raise their circulating calcium levels enough so that they start putting it back to bone building and then to actually build (and...
When my chameleon had broken bones due to MBD he would continually grab a front leg with his hind leg, and then refuse to let go. We were worried that he would never be able to "be a chameleon again" because he would literally topple himself over before letting go -- I honestly don't think that...
To effectively splint it -- because what you really want to do is immobilize it so that the bones can knit -- the joint before and after need to be immobilized.
Hermie still managed to get around with four splints and immobilized joints, but I did not give him anything to climb on while he...
I would have to say that splinting an chameleon's bones is NOT easy even for vets, though it can be done. THe vet that I use is known for being one of the most creative and talented osteopathic vets in the area and it was a challenge -- chameleon's don't exactly understand "stand still" and...
Hey Stuey,
I noticed that it says that you're in Detroit? I'm from MI too ... if you need the names of some vets that I know personally who have good experience with MBD let me know. THey might be a bit of a drive for you though, depending on exactly where you're located.
Good luck!
Jamie
If you need any encouragement I just posted a new picture of hermie at:
www.xanga.com/hermanthechameleon
I tried to upload it here but was having difficulties. I'm not always the most computer savy individual.
But he's doing very well considering. His bones have completely healed...
My chameleon Hermie had very very very severe MBD -- all four legs broke in at least one spot. If you search through the Health Clinic forum you'll see lots of posts on him.
I am happy to report that he is still doing GREAT.
I would recommend that you get him on liquid calcium twice a day...
I just wanted to pop in quickly to throw this out there, in case it can help anyone. When Hermie got his impaction (which he passed) the vet put him on this "carnivore care" food. It comes as a powder and you mix water in to get the consistency that you want. I think someone had expressed some...
I tried pheonix worms for Hermie (calcium is a good thing for him).
He zapped it right away with his tonge and immediately began spitting it back out ... and left it half chewed and yucky on his leaf. And never touched another one again.
frank --
"hermie" has a website: www.xanga.com/hermanthechameleon that he updates as time permits (and whenever he can escape from his cage). It's his point of view on some of the happenings in his life.
Sorry, I was sick this weekend and obviously it affected my abilities to read and comprehend properly.
The reptivit's vitamin A just says "vitamine A (acetate)" so I do now know if it's synthetic or not. There is an expiration date on the bottle and I was very careful about not using...
The reptivite does contain vitamin A and I dusted his crickets with Reptical with both calcium and vitamin D3 ... I live in MI and I got him in November, and it was marchish I think when he broke his legs, so he never had access to direct sunlight with me.
I use a digital probe to monitor the...
The vet gave me lactone for him which is like a lubricant. He said not to be surprised if Hermie gets very loose stool from it. He is also having me make up the carnivore care with extra water to make sure that he gets more, and I have a bag of fluids and know how to give him subq fluids if...
The carnivore care says that it's "A nutritionally complete assisted-feeding formula for convalescing carnivores." It's made by the Hay Oxbrow company. Their ph # is 800 249 0366. It says that "highly digestable protein sources make carnivore care an ideal choice when providing supplemental...
The Hermie drama continues...
I noticed on thursday that Hermie went to bed a little early for him, and figured that I better keep an eye on him. The next morning he got up and moved under his basking light so I left for school. Came back in the evening to find him in the exact same spot...
Oh they are seperate! Well ... when hermie went wandering (little devil!) he could see him (or was just attracted to the heat lamp that was on ernest's cage). There's an arm chair and entire room between the two of them -- there's no way they can see eachother. And I'd never let them out...
Well for all of you who "know" hermie ... this wont come as a surprise.
Apparently I was a bad mom this morning and left the bottom clip off of hermie's cage (mind you to get out he has to climb about 6 inches up a bottom liner and then climb down and between the flap and liner). I...
