Welcome to the forums! You will learn A LOT on here :) Personally, I don't have any substrate, I just have that plastic piece that came with my cage which is sooo easy to clean. Best of luck with your cham :)
That's too funny. My guy holds on for dear life sometimes too but never left marks. I know some people have mentioned that they get really itchy after holding their chams, I'm not sure what causes that. Can you post a pic of "the panther" so we can vote on names? :)
Try to keep the free range up off the floor so he can't get down, but make sure if he does decide to make an escape that he can't hurt himself. I usually put paper towels down for poop.
