Bill Strand did an amazing job on this podcast. Very thoughtful and well laid out. Most of the folks at the Reddit chameleon forums are water bowl fanatics, despite the fact that few chameleons keepers use them. They do not welcome anything that questions their assumptions, however unfounded.
Chameleon keeping is not a cheap hobby. The animal itself is only a small part of the total expense. Please don't buy one if you can't afford to properly take care of it.
My guy is like a monkey and loves to climb anything, but I always feel like he's going to fall when he climbs up my arm or anywhere else outside his enclosure. Especially when he's standing on just two legs on the edge of someplace. I'm assuming they don't fall very easily.
Mine developed a white spot on his back yesterday. This morning he was 90% white because he's shedding. By end of day, most of the old white skin was gone!
I'm using a "Zoo Med ReptiSun 5.0 UVB T5 HO" and it's not a burn issue at about 7 inches away. It measures about 3.5 on the light meter from the top of his back.
Ideally, you would measure light throughput with a light meter. I did and found almost no loss with 1/2”, but traditional window screens were terrible. I suspect the photo is somewhere in the middle
For the top mesh, it may depend on what feeders you use. Black soldiers and dubias won’t escape out of the top. Personally I think 1/2" welded wire cloth is the way to go
I'm not clear if you're also talking about the top (ceiling) part which the light will sit on. It's important to consider light blockage of a tight mesh or a plastic coated type,.
Have you tried black soldier flies? I was reluctant to handle them, but they basically just act and look like small worms. They are very nutritious and cheap. You don't even need to dust them. My cham loves them as much as superworms.
Can you hang planters from the top? That's what I did for some of mine. You can buy generic Hanging Basket Chains to attach to any pot.
