Another pic from today. I never take her out, and she sure doesn’t like it, but I wanted to get a good look at her. And, I returned her to her palace within a minute, where she quickly calmed down and returned to wandering, hiding and hunting. :)
I usually stick pieces of carrot around the top-middle and bottom of the cage.
Surprisingly, they don’t seem to feed much when they’re in the cage (not that they last very long either). Wonder if they nibble a bit on the veg I give them, perhaps the pothos, perhaps gross things?
I tend to...
My cham is in a 2x2x4ft cage, sitting atop a 3ft high/sqauare table. My 11-year old (and still awesome!) cat doesn’t even acknowledge the cage. I have a solid scratch post for him, and he gets to roam the house. If anything, he howls out of jealousy when I’m paying attention to my cham...
I’m by no means an expert, but a few points based on my own experience...
First, crickets certainly won’t bite your cham during daytime - they’ll be eaten if they try, and if they aren’t then your cham is sick.
Second, if your cage is big and complex enough, with food in places your cham won’t...
Nice big cage!!! :)
My most recent mistake was not properly breaking all the bark off the additional branches/walkways I added to my girl’s cage last week. She had munched on some bark and I was worried about impaction - and looked very uncomfortable last night.
Thankfully, she took a fairly...
How is your cage set up? Do you have equal access across the canopy, middle and bottom (especaially near the cage corners/sides)?
From what you said, it sounds like your girl could eat a bit more. Gut-loaded/dusted crickets roaming around the cage, and the same with superworms roaming around...
I don’t like cups - I feel they’re best for selfish owner desires. Better to have your cham hunt, provided you have built a nice hunting ground for it to roam.
I’m sure you can make one yourself easy with a large plastic cup with a wire mesh fence taped to one side.
Personally, I live to let my cham’s prey free to roam within the cage. Chams aren’t really domesticated animals, and I like to think that letting them hunt is equally good for them overall.
to add, i try not to overfeed her, even though i provide a bunch of crickets in her labrynth of a cage for her to hunt as she pleases. she does seem to have mastered her habitat though, averaging around 4-6 medium crickets per day, with around 2 superworms/day as of late..
saw her eat a bit of...
thanks all (especially CJ).
i’m not sure i’m about to install a feeding cup, as i like my girl to hunt for her food. she’s been eating superworms crawling around the bottom lately. i don’t want to let her eat too many of them, but am glad that she’s getting some variety.
as far as dubia...
Isn’t getting used to you. If it’s walking around on the street I’d bet it’s super stressed and super starved (and dehydrated).
Hope you have a good home awaiting, or else best to put back by a wetland of some sort. Worst case, it’ll become food for some other animal. But if you have a good...
I’m very happy with my monsoon. Super simple to set up, and I like the various settings - especially great if you get an additional inexpensive timer so it doesn’t mist during sleep time.
Found mine for $100 at a reptile expo and it was well worth it.
:)
I live in MA and it gets quite dry in the winter. Lately, I’ve been running a humidifier next to her cage with additional hand misting (aside from the Monsoon that runs every 2-4hr depending on how much I must by hand).
I’m trying to get her more used to being handled especially for when...
If one of the purposes of having pathways is to provide good stimulus, I sometimes wonder whether or not chams like solid walls in their enclosures. My girl seems to like staring outside (cage is right next to a tall window), seems like its good stimulus - not as strong as being able to...
