A fan?

I have a small 4 in fan I recently purchased and I've set it up at the top of my veiled chameleon screen cage, anyone have any information on any negative effects on this? I figured the small fan would create a nice breeze for my Cham enclosure. Greatful for any info from experienced cam owners .

read neccas book, there are several mentioning of how wind drag affect chameleons negativ

I do belive due, if you dont have still standing water formations and you dont have poop or dead crickes laying around in the cage the screen cage will have enough airflow by it self

I have an outdoor Lasko misting fan and a Holmes floor air filter, both running in one room of chams. Neither are directly aimed at the cages. The fan runs on low and high, depending on time of day. The filter runs on low to high, depending on need. The cages tend to dry out in about 20-30 minutes. Room RH is 35-45%. In my other room, I run the same kind of air filter on high, always. It is also pointed away from the cages. They help to pull air and fine dust away from the cages. Keeps them from ingesting any unwanted fine particles. Knock on wood, never had any bacteria issues.

I have a ceiling fan that runs all day in my family room. It is where my cham cage is. Would this be bad for them. They ate about ten feet away from them

I run ceiling fans 24/7 in every room of my house. In the cham room it is on low just to circulate air, really cant even feel it unless you stick your hand a couple feet from it. Helps keep the room at a more constant temperature and helps dry out the cages between mistings.

I run a fan in all my lizard cages. They are 80mm computer fans that aren't very powerful. The key is that the aren't for the chameleon/lizards at all. They are to avoid stagnant humidity and slowly evaporate water between mistings. The chameleon has very little interaction with the fan and probably wouldn't know whether it's on or off unless it climbed on the screen underneath it.

The arrow shows the location of the fan and you can see how small it is compared to the cage.

with a screen mesh cage you definitely do not need a fan. its not recommended to put them anywhere that there is a breeze due to possible respiratory infection

I've never bought the whole "fans are bad" mantra. Just like the "glass terrariums are bad". It's just not true. Air movement is a good thing for chameleons. They live in trees with a breeze blowing on and off throughout the day. However, like a lot of incorrect ideas there is a kernel of truth from which it grew. A fan blowing in cooler air from the same direction day in and day out....not good. But air movement, produced by a fan or otherwise, that changes direction and is intermittent...very good and natural. Just make sure you aren't blowing cold air into a warm cage. For what it's worth I run a standing oscillating fan in my lizard room throughout the day. I find it to be very beneficial.

don´t know about that, in neccas book it say that hot air draft is even worse, chameleons do experience draft in nature but they try to avoid it and move away from it

I think it probably come from the fan quickly changing the temperature in the cage or blowing fungal spores around. It's probably obvious why quick changes in temp would be bad. But there also could be the risk of blowing fungal spores around from decaying stuff on the bottom of the cage. But as long as you clean you cage regularly and don't have a trash dump at the bottom I don't see a problem with fans. And I've been running them for a while now with no issues.

well the same as waterfalls I would play the safe way and don´t have it, the exo terra chimney effect terrarium have a good air circulations, you have a nice setup but it is an aquarium, I could see the need of some help with circulation, no offence of course. but other terrariums with front and full top screen ventilation or mesh do have enough with airflow

I recently added a large inline bathroom fan (340cu ft min) in my chameleon room to provide slight air movement and draw fresh air in. I also needed it to help reduce the heat in the room from the Quad T5 HO light fixtures, those things put out some heat. I'm still experimenting on how I'll use it but it will probably be on from 11:00am to 8:00pm. Reduce heat during the day and draw cool air in in the evening.
