my male panther is extremely aggressive, i dont know if i should mate him with my female or not due to that fact. i tried on March 13th he seemed to be receptive...he bobbed his head, but he also flared as if she were a threat.....they got a little bit closer and he opened his mouth.....i was wondering if i should keep trying...

some insight on everybody's opinion would better help me into making a decision on what to do...thanks.

maybe

maybe you should keep trying and if it gets better then :) but if it gets worse maybe hold it off a couple of months say 6-12. hope that helps

How old is your male? and female? How did the female react when she saw the male? Did you introduce him to her cage or her to his cage?

Males can behave this way. You said he was opening his mouth at her. If this is the only aggressive behavior, I would continue to try to mate them. If he attempts to bite her, then that is a different story.

6 to 12 months!?

I would try every few days, if it carrys on then try every week.

But I would say you should actualy leave them together no matter how he is acting at first, just be ready to seperate if he tries biting her, place the female a distant away from him but where he can see her. Then he can make his own move, but always watch to see they are fine.

Your female looks to be the right size from what I can tell but It's impossible to see without a ruler or her weight but the male looks young. Say 7 or 8 months old(just my guess). I have had younger males in the 8-10 month range react very weird to females. Some act very aggressively at random times towards females and then other times want to mate like crazy but just ride around of the females back for a day. After a few attempts they learn whats going one. Also the male may be reacting to you putting the female in his enclosure. They often bite at my hands with the female on it and are very aggressive until the female is off my hand and the door is shut. Then everything seems to go smoothly. Place the female in his cage the farthest away from his you can and then you will see what is going to happen before it does. If he is puffing and sprints at her and attempts to bite remove him. If his head is bobbing just walk away and let them do their thing. that is if she is receptive of course.

EDIT: Also I hope they are not chams from the same bloodline/clutch. If they are I would not breed them.

and the mouth opening isnt the only aggressive behavior he puffs up and all but i dont think she was receptive towards him thats why he gets defensive, becuase she will also puff and flare...but no hissing. i think it would have been smarter to stick him in her cage....he is also aggressive towards me so i thought twice about it, i didnt want to stress him out.

which reminds me! i need a name for him...based on his picture could someone maybe give me some suggestions?:)....also maybe a couple remedies for aggressiveness?:D:D

I'd say the female is not receptive then either. It would probably be better to wait til the male is a little older anyways. It's nice to know what colors your sire is truly packing before you start breeding them. I have bred young males but prefer to wait until I know they are awesome looking. However that doesn't look to be a problem with your guy. He looks sweet. As for names I'm horrible with them. OVer half of my 20 or so panthers do not have names. They are just called generic phrases. You could name him Michael Jordan(The name of 3 of my male chameleons) or Bob or helios or jamall or lil wayne or nas or kurt cobain or bob dylan. Like I said I'm horrible at names. He does look really good though.

If they are in screened cages place the cages side by side or if they already are remove the barrier. This is a much safer way to see how they both are going to react.;)
