Almost finished with my Turkish Roach setup!

Last weekend I finally took the step into breeding my own feeders :)! I went to a reptile expo saturday and talked to my mom about getting roaches (because unlike crickets, they are silent, and don't smell bad :p) and she said I can only get Turkish because they are smaller and aren't ugly black with wings. I have it setup in my closet because that's the only place I have room for it, and I heard they like to be in the dark. I have a regular heat bulb on top. I put some egg carton parts in there but I still need more. Right now I'm feeding them carrots and oranges, and I put the orange flukers cricket cubes in there for water and vitamins. I really feel like I should change the diet up though, let me know if I have it right please :). At night should I turn the light on or leave it off?

I would suggest to give them some darkness...maybe a ceramic bulb?? I got mine to breed like flies...if those are the same as "turkistan roaches"..I found them to be very fast little critters....almost too fast!!!

I close the closet door when I'm not using them. The red on the light isnt very bright. They are very fast! As soon as I open the closet their gone!

lol, they will be blonde with wings! They also do have a different smell than dubia. A roach i cant smell for some reason is discoids. They get huge though.

i would take the suggestion of removing the light providing a under tank heater, stack of egg crates, temps around 80* keep them fed and watered. I will also spray a few times into the bin for a tad bit of humidity spike. be sure of no standing water in the bottom of the bin.

Wow, bad choice on your mom's part. They are one of the kinds that can infest houses.

BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD SETUP

This is an honest warning (I keep them too). With how that is set up you run a serious risk of infestation.

They can potentially infest the house depending where you live, and WHY OH WHY are you using an aquarium? The babies will escape and be ALL over the house.

Use a rubbermaid or something where they can't climb the corners.

I use a heat pad and uses much less energy than a light, but that is up to you.

I would recommend Dubia over Turkistan any day.

If you are going to keep the Turks...use a heat mat http://beanfarm.com/product_info.php?cPath=1204&products_id=5579
And please get a container with no corners. Your mom will castrate you if you keep the current setup...she will find roaches in the laundry, pantry, everywhere.
Cat or Ferrett food is a good protein staple, and whatever fruit/veggie scraps you have laying around.

I guess I made the mistake of listening to the store again o.o... I had a rubberermaid one but they still climbed up the walls?

I use something like this: http://www.organizeit-online.com/images/2140.JPG

And dubia are a lot less likely to infest a house north of the Tropics. Also Dubia babies wouldn't get through the screen lid....Turks will. I do not know where you live. Where I live it's not so much a problem, but with the escapees I have had I can see how they can & should be banned in some States.

Well I live in Washington state. I don't know if that will affect them taking over the house or not lol.

This is VERY TRUE. Out of almost all the feeder roaches you could have chosen, how did you decide upon Turks? They are horrible, and I've got some that I don't even want anymore, and I don't want to feed them either out of fear of them escaping.

Every now and then I find a dubia roach baby around the house, and that's not so bad as they look like little isopods. But can you imagine finding one of those nasty shit's (excuse my French) around the house? Gag me!

They probably wont, but they can still infest a house and thrive without ever leaving the home. I've never heard of a case where dubia infested anything in the states. The only places I can see that even as a minute possibility is SoCal, Texas, and Florida.

Use some olive oil and slick packing tape as a barrier to help prevent escapes.

Oh man, you know it's bad when the Small Pet Feeders Guy says they are gross. I think I would be flushing those things immediately! And take it from a mom....If these guys escape, she will NEVER allow you to bring another roach in the house, maybe no live feeders at all!

There not that bad you just have to know what you are doing lol. yes they are fast and yes there is a chance they can infest but a very small chance. I have been breeding these guys for a good bit now and I have not had one issue.. knock on wood.

Dubias cant climb shit. Period. I really love mine, and even worry if they are living "comfortably", have enough food, space, darkness ect. I want them to be happy before they die. Thats how much I love them. I cant think of one reason not have some. They are great all around. I wouldnt ever keep a roach that could climb! Ive seen dubias move "quick". But they are definitely in slow mo 99% of the time.

Ok everyone, I've disposed of the mutants you speak of called "Turkish" :). I'm going to get my setup complete and have everyone approve it before I try to do roaches again. And this time, I'm doing Dubais. After everything everyone has said, I don't trust these...

Guy at the reptile expo recommended them to me.
