I'm building my own cage with aluminum mesh and wondering the ups and downs of it. Can crickets chew their way out? Is it durable even when my chameleon gets big? Thanks.
One experienced breeder I met once told me, "If you leave crickets inside something for long enough, they will chew their way out eventually..." He was referring specifically to aluminium mesh cages.
But if you leave crickets in there long enough to chew their way through (we'd be talking about plenty undistrubed days here), it wouldn't be a good situation for the cham inside the cage either. You should always empty out uneaten feeder insects at the end of the day: not only to prevent escape or harm to the cham, but also to ensure that they are always properly gutloaded when they are fed to the cham.
If you ensure that you don't leave crickets in the cage overnight, then you shouldn't have any problems with them chewing through the aluminium mesh (or most meshes for that matter).
But the downside of aluminium mesh is that it is hard on the cham's feet and nails, and some keepers complain of chameleons losing toenails due to aluminium mesh.
