aluminum screen & water?

Hey all,

I have never thought of this before and do not recall seeing it addressed. I was just setting up Cy's dripper (for the zillionth time) and as it hit the aluminum dome of his light (which sits atop his cage and I moved away) I thought about aluminum leaching into the water. Of course the screen is aluminum. Aluminum is not something that any animal should ingest and I wonder if it can leach into cool/tepid water as it can into hot (eg: when cooking). Not terribly concerned, but just made me curious a if anyone ever gave this any thought.

lele,

I've never thought about it....my dripper doesn't hit anything, Kitty drinks out of the end of the hose:)
I can't imagine this would be of any concern.....But, honestly, I don't know.

Awwww Finally a question as to which I would consider myself an expert at!

Your concern is valid; however you have nothing to worry. The way in which most AL screen is made (woven wire) you have nothing to worry about. Drippers and misters are not in contact with water and don’t have the required force/flow for the AL to yelled any additives to the water. The wire which the screen is made of us usually some funky alloy of melted together recycled AL and then formed into the wire, also when the wire is made they coat it with an inert sealer to protect it. So with the low flow of our watering systems and the coatings that the wire and screen get you have nothing to worry about…

Now if you hook your mister up to a power washer you might have a lil problem. :)

huh? lol! that's confusing

all in all I think what you are saying is that the wire is coated and the minimal amount of contact from a dripper is not of concern? Makes sense. I wasn't terribly worried but it was just a new thought (I have them every now and again:p).

Are you an expert because you have thought of this as well and researched it? Make screen? Or eaten one too many meals from aluminum pots?

too many meals from AL pots... :) Actually I do alot of work in Robotics... I deal with AL, MG, titanium, steel, in different alloys just about everyday... It's a hobby/sport that I am involved with, that sometimes lets me make money when people need a machine to do a said task... I recently made a maching that used a large amount of wire screen; which needed alot of looking into as to how it was made... I am also working with the TV show MADE on MTV right now trying to fine a coach for a girly girl.
Tiz just another thing to take up some of the day :D www.teamwazio.com to see some of the machines that I have built.
