Animals self-medicate with plants …

I’ve always found it amazing and fascinating!
I think humans did it in the very old days…just like the animals do, but we’ve lost it in the last couple of 100 years or so.I think we’ve stopped listening to our bodies like we should.

Great topic. Thanks for sharing.

I think people today medicate with wild plants and herbs. There is most definately a population hear in Northern California that makes use of native flora and fauna. That idea for people is not unheard of in modern times.

Reptile keepers from the Chameleon Forums are breeding native species of grasshoppers (Schistocerca) to feed to their exotic reptiles.

Always glad to share sites I find.

Although there are groups that practice using natural things to medicate, they are not as practiced in it as people used to be in many ways, I don’t think.

One thing to remember is, we like to go oh these people did this and now people don’t do it anymore…. But then don’t forget we live much longer. are bigger, stronger, and smarter than ever before.

Regarding the animals… things like elephants, corvids, apes, dolphins, etc I’m not surprised by. They’re all intelligent enough to pick up on things and pass that information to each other. Like x made me sick and when I ate y I felt better. I wonder how animals without complex intelligence figure these things out. Like if there is some sort of biological instinct/trigger that draws them to the antidotes. Then how does that info get passed on. Must be some kind of DNA change that gets passed on and causes that trigger in the offspring?
