I was wondering if there is anyone else from South Africa on this site? I want to know where in SA I can buy the various types of foods, because now I only know of superworms, crickets, ans silkworms.
Hey there. I'm from south africa. I'm actually looking for silkworms lol. Where do you find them forsale and how much are they? The only other feeders that are missing from your list would probably be roaches. You can check out (Google) SAroachman, he breeds and sells many species of cockroaches and the favourites such as Dubias, lobster roaches and hissers. What chameleons are you currently keeping? You breeding them too?
Thanl goodness there is someone else from SA. I don't have any silkworms at the mome t, I am busy doing research on how to breed them, I only have in season time. I have a flap neck and no, i do not breed. What type of cham do you have? I am from pretoria
Hey. There's actually a few more south africans on the forum. But I am the only member that's actually still very active on the forum. You can PM me if you have any questions and such. I have baby panthers and veileds which I'm breeding in a couple months.
So I got given a baby veiled this morning by my aunt. (Because I FLIPPIN love chameleons ) haha but yeah... was wondering if you guys use heat lamps in your tanks? im in JHB and it gets very hot... but I'm thinking i should invest in one for winter?
Also, if you guys are from jhb, where is the best place for me to purchase my cham a new mesh tank? im keeping him in a sort of fish tank temporarily, but i'd like to get him something with more space fairly soon...
And one LAST question, he's looking a little pale... he's finally gone to sleep, but he hasnt eaten today... he's had lots of water though is that normal? maybe he's homesick?
I build my cham an outdoor cage, so I do use the ceramic heat lamp for night time, but during the day he gets allot of sun and heat.
My Rango is also not eating, so I was wondering if it has something to do with the fact that it is almost winter? So if anyone can answer that, I would appreciate it.
I am from Pretoria, but try www.reptilecity.co.za. There are some ready build cages, and they are very reasonable. It cost me plus minus R2000 to build my outdoor cage, and he sells a pinewood cage, about 1.8 m high with glass pannels and everything for about R 1900, so you will find the perfect cage for u there.
Hello all of you. I am in the US but I will be getting 3 B. transvaalence very soon? Do any of you know about them? I am very excited.
I doubt I can help any of you, but I have research material, if you have questions. It is very wonderful to have you all 3 on the forum.
I'm familiar with the b transvaalense. I have not been fortunate to see a live specimen, only a dead female alongside a walk pathway a few metres away fro m the mac mac falls waterfall. Maybe another time, I've only been fortunate enough to see hundreds of b pumilum
The best cages for chameleons are flexariums and reptibreezes. I have a friend that has a shop in fourways johannesburg and they sell reptibreezes.
I don't put my chameleons in those kind of cages till they are of the right size. My babies stay in plastic tubs in the mean time. He will need a heat lamp for the winter in johannesburg. I don't have serious heat over mine at night but there is a 12 hour light cycle where I have my spotlamps and UVB tubes on over them. They need heat for digestion to go on naturally. The dry johannesburg winter cab be harsh on our chameleons.
Oo no we don't have it that bad here the worst we get to is about -15C that's at really bad times but I'm sure we can reach close to -20 at times too. In winter my room is actually a bit warmer at times as the sun is in a different position and glares into my room for most of the day, so it could be about 15 degrees outside and about 28 in my room
This link is for south africans to check out, the guy who made this website (David Hagett) made it in consideration of keeping and breeding chameleons especially to our climates in south africa and mainly Gauteng. Please be aware the chameleons pictured on his site are no longer for sale by him, he has moved to the UK and does not breed those chameleons in SA anymore, I do however http://www.sa-chameleons.com/
He also wrote a very detailed book about breeding and keeping the most common chameleons available in south africa with a few rareties that we sometimes come across in the market. I will try find the name of the book and post back.
Thanks for the replies guys... so i was mistaken and it turns out he's a flapneck... i got him a ficus tree, and put some mesh around the base for now... hes not going a deep green anymore though, but in the sun he goes a sort of lime with dark green spots is that normal?
Just worried about the whole not eating... I havent seen him eat, and ive been counting the crickets, but a minor spillage of the cricket box turned out to be quite a hassle... if someone in the jhb area can maybe email me and i can bring him to you or something? [email protected]
