I have a few questions regarding gut loading ingredients I have found. This is a list of the ingredients I'm thinking of trying to put in my gut load mix,can you please tell me whether these ingredients are safe to use? (Ill put the link next to the ingredient if I found one.)

  10. cracked corn
  11. peanuts
  12. cinnamon
  13. calcium supplements (Instead of dusting them feed it to them)
  14. White bread
  15. rice

Thank you for looking at this post, you don't need to answer all of the questions, any help you can give is welcome! As a side note I would like to mention that the specific items I put links to are not set in stone I will probably change the specific items later if they get positive responses, and also I know some of these ingredients have very similar nutrient content but I am only trying to keep all of my options open for gut loading.

Just a few more questions regarding general ingredients:
  1. Is protein generally good or bad for gut loading?
  2. Are grains generally good or bad for gut loading?
  3. Should I stay away from pre-made feeds like goat feed or rabbit feed because of the vitamins in it?

I guess for the most part I'm in favor of feeding the insects what will make them healthy and feel that if the chameleons eat the insects they will be healthy too...of course the supplements should be counted/included as part of the nutrition too.

This might help...Susan James was known as the "mother of all chameleons", Don Wells was well known to many of us old chameleon keepers and an owner of ADCHAM and Ken Lopez is a well known vet....

You might read what Susan has to say in this thread too...

Regarding chicken scratch....it's like us eating French fries...not to good for us. Also with poultry feed you have to be careful...some have formaldehyde in or antibiotics or phosphorous or other things you don't want your chameleon to end up with in their systems.

I'm not going through the whole list....just want to say...read the list of ingredients and nutrients and vitamins and minerals in each thing you want to use and decide if that is good or bad for the insects and the chameleons.
