Baytril

Hi!

So my male Jackson has mouth rot and today my vet prescribed .01 ml baytril 2x per day. Today I found out that baytril causes kidney problems to the chammies, I work at Petsmart and I knew baytril was strong but I didn't know it did that so now I'm stressed that I'm going to kill my cham. Is there any way to battle or prevent the kidneys from failing while on baytril???? Or vitamins.....ANYTHING! I need to know that there are success stories of chameleons surviving the treatment. Thank you!
Amanda

From what I have read folks whose chams were on baytril very closely monitored hydration. So I assume keeping them well hydrated, almost to the extreme, helps preserve kidney function.

Yep just make sure plenty of water is offered. It wouldn't hurt to provide a nice long warm shower in addition to your regular hydration schedule.

The biggest thing with baytril is to make sure you give proper dosages, and to keep your cham hydrated. Offer extra times throughout the day for your cham to drink.

Hello,
I just finished the 10th day of Baytril. I gave almost ever day shower to her and she had a dropper. She and her poop/pee looks good. I was afraid a little bit too but a shower helps for sure!

Thank you for the advice! I've doubled how much I water them every day (3-4x per day now) and usually when I water they'll come up to my mister and drink from it at least once a day so I'm hopeful, he's still moving around fine and seems to still have lots of energy.

Here is a picture of them- Fumo and Kiwi. :)

Thanks again!

There is a lot of misinformation floating around about Baytril.

If used as prescribed and proper hydration, it does not cause any organ
damage, or at least non that has been documented.
If it did, vets would not be using it.
In fact, it's the antibiotic of choice for chams, as it has the least side effects.

Just listen to what your vet tells you ;)
