Welcome to the forums. IMO there's really not a starter chameleon. They are all high maintenance animals they require special care to keep them alive and healthy. Some people will tell you a veiled or panther but they require just as much research and preparing as a Jackson or Pygmy. I do highly recommend you start with a CB captive breed. WC wild caught chameleons are even harder for beginners.
I am an animal lover and wanted something exotic and excited to look after.
I went for the veield chamelon not because thy're "easy" but because theyre hardier chameleon and the temps/humidity requirments are simple to follow.
I preffered the look of the veiled chameleon the most, al though I had heard that they're an agressive specist to keep and handle, but in my experience I appricaited that these animals are for show not to be pestered.
But I did want to be able to handle him in order to be able to take him out of his viv so he could roam around... this took months of beign patien hand feeding only, sitting with him every other day for 20 minutes of so just being there so he could be at ease iwth my presence then but letting him walk across my hand when he was wlaking aorund hi viv.. eventually he has become so confortable with me he run to the doors of his vi when I come home from work in order to be picked up and taken out to explore.
I picked veiled for my first chameleon because they are a bit less likely to die when you make mistakes. Had him for almost two years now and things are going well. You still have to give them a lot of care and do a lot of research, but as a first-time owner you won't be perfect, and veiled chameleons are more likely to thrive regardless.
