I came across these pics while doing a search on Google then came acrossed an old thread about someone who was breeding a new morph that had these black patches (it's the 5th pic) the thread was 2006 I wanted to know if they have black veileds the only morph I know of is translucent

It is called Hypermelanistic and it is/was a morph. They were produced by a breeder in the UK but I'm not sure how far they got with the line. You would have to research that as I'm not the Veiled expert. I do think the translucents are pretty cool though!

The black is considerably different than the black being shown by a gravid female Veiled.

When my female is gravid she turns bright vibrant green with bright blue spots and yellow patches I never saw a black gravid female veiled

That would be pretty cool to see a black morph. The translucents are alright I guess, nothing to breathe taking IMO. What is the definition of hypermelanistic? Not familiar with this term.

They will only turn that dark color when they want no part of a male, so they are under a great deal of stress when they are showing that color. You don't want to get a male just to torment your female. I know, tempting, but you still don't want to do it.

Here is the non-receptive coloring of a quad. It's my favorite color.

That's gorgeous! So they'll actually display these colors to a male when they don't want anything to do with them?

Yes--the quads go a velvety tarry black with sparkly jade green jewels. It's very pretty and my favorite color, but they are not happy when they are that color so I enjoy it when I see it and do whatever I can to stop her from being upset. That particular female was so mad that she stayed like that for hours, even when she couldn't see the male.

I have to say, those pictures of the female veiled are really spectacular.

I didn't realize once could stay that fired up for so long! And agreed, they're beautiful.

Well, consider that displaying gravid coloration is a form of "firing up", and the female would have to display it fairly constantly so she isn't approached by inquisitive males. We know that stress hormones trigger firing, so I'm sure the hormonal change in a gravid female makes long displays possible too.

I know its a matter of personal preference, but always seems odd to me that anyone would want to breed for a lack of changeable color (translucent, hypermelanistic) in animals that are known for their color change.

Hypermelanistic means the skin has a super high level of melanin so an animal is much darker than normal. The animal may be darker overall, deep brown or black, or have more intense and larger dark markings than it usually would.

I see. Thank you! Now I know.
