My baby quad finished hatching just this morning. It was about 6am when I took it out of the incubator and placed it in the cage. *Baby was a little plump, like it was retaining water. At 1:30pm I returned home to find dry blood on the side of my white mesh cage up near the top. *Found the little one climbing back up the side near the bottom with its mouth wide open. *I misted for a fee seconds and then retrieved it from the cage. *I noticed that it had a open sore above the rear leg. *Two other babies in the same incloseure and they are fine. Temp at the time I returned home was 68* and humidity was mid 90's. *
My previously baby that looked and felt plump didn't last a day before in started twitching as if it had hypertension, *twisting in weird ways.

Pictures if possible too?

wow! baby quads! that's awesome, congrats. really sorry to hear about the one with the sore. hope it gets better!

Yes, pictures please. We would love to offer our two cents.

If you can, please share your incubation duration and any other details you think of.

Great job with the quads!

I linked to the picture I case you can't see it.

It's not the yok and the eggs have been incubating for a little over 4 months.
Temp was 71-72* humidity enough to get small water drops on the lid in a few days.

Have you witnessed any aggression from its cage-mates? Also- exactly what is in the enclosure with the babies? Pictures would be useful too.

No aggression by the little one that i have seen, what ever happen to it must have happen to it when it was on the side of the cage near the top where the blood stain is. There is nothing around that part of he cage.
Tube lights about 3 inches away from top and a basking light (small 65w) over a foot from the cage just for a little heat and indirect heat from a 250 watt heat light.
Inside is a couple plants a piece of driftwood a fake vine also my wireless thermometer.
Nothing I think could cause the injury... It is a baby chameleon though?!

In the picture, the side of the neonate looks like a sore too, is it, or is it just the blood? Also- did you have any leftover crickets in there?

LPR08

Have you tried to clean it at all? Maybe gently wipe it with a moist q-tip to see if it is only exterior, and not a wound.

cleaned with a moist q-tip with a tad bit of peroxide when I noticed it. Its a sore for sure. Cage had a few pin heads, but for the amount of damage just doesn't equal up. It has been in the cage for just 7 hours. Thinking of putting a tad bit of vasoline over the sore to prevent infection in its humid enclosure. Would this be OK? Also I think this is going more toward the "health clinic forum".
Would also like to address the swolen baby that lasted only a day. Could that be a breeding problem (lack or excess of vitamins?)
Mikey

i would flush it w/ saline, a small dab of triple antibiotic ointment (like neosporin) would be good. it could be a cricket bite, they are aweful creatures! maybe a fight? i've seen some of my baby chams get pretty ticked when they get climbed on. idk if they could ever break eachothers skin. as for the swollen one, it's really sad, but not all of the babies taht hatch survive. in the wild the weaker ones would get picked off, breading in captivity is hard like that, beacuse yu have to either cull the weak yourself, or let nature take it's course. (wow, that was deep! i have a baby beardie that i've been forcefeeding for over a month now, it just sleeps all day, doesnt run around, barely opens it's eyes. ive been in some serious denial about the fate of this baby, but reading this back has made me realize what needs to be done.):(

Not 100% sure about the Vaseline thing, but regarding the "swollen" baby- what were the incubation lengths? Did you add water to the egg bin shortly before the eggs started hatching?

LPR08

I would worry about cleaning it up, putting it in a cage alone and go from there. No way to know what happened so do what you can now. Keep it clean with neosporin type cream on it. Good luck.

A matter of fact i did add a bit of water after the first couple hatched, because i was checking the eggs alot more. Is that somethong that happens if you have too much humidity near the end?
Eggs incubated alittle over 4 months. Close to two weeks later and still have 5 eggs that have not shrunk yet.
Baby has been cleaned and treated.
Thanks

Maggots might actually help the sore rather than make it worse. They eat dead flesh so they would help clean it up. They are used in medicine for burns sometimes.

If you use neosporin, get the ointment if you want something like vaseline.

You are joking right? Yes we all know about how surgeons use leeches to prevent clotting and bugs are beneficial etc etc but if your chameleon has a maggot chewing on him this would be a very bad thing. I mean what the heck is this cham just bleeding from? The title is "Bloody baby quad". What a weird thread.
