Thanks in advance

Ash should work. You just want to avoid using branches that might have irritating sap (fresh), really badly rotted or insect infested wood, or live fungi. Give the branches a scrub with hot water/bleach (10 parts hot water 1 part bleach), rinse well, and let dry.

I use branches all the time from outside and do all of the things that Carlton recommends, except for cleaning with the 1:10 bleach solution. I'm leery about using any chemicals in my terrariums but I do give them a good scrub 1st in the shower. When I do my monthly cleaning I spray everything down with vinegar and water. Works well for me and I've never had any problems. I live in the woods and have used branches of all types such as birch, maple, ash, and gum. Saves a lot of money and does give it a great natural feel. I get fake vines from the craft store, so much cheaper than buying the fake vines from the pet store, and I wrap them around the branches too. I have live plants but they're not big enough to completely fill up the terrarium so the branches and vines are wonderful for filling up the extra space, giving more coverage/climbing areas, and helping them feel more secure in there.
