breeding ambanjas

Red bar and blue bar Ambanja are just variations that occur within the same locality. Are these two related to each other, if not then you shouldnt have any issues with birth rate or genetic defects.

We are pretty sure that our chameleon is a cross between a blue bar and a red bar ambanja because he shows both colours and often purple. He seems to have no birth defects, so I say go for it!!

I dont think there is any evidence of "genetic defects" from inbreeding reptiles/chameleons...

It hasnt proven to be the cause of birth defects or low hatch rates but I still wouldnt breed siblings or related chams. We as keepers need to keep lines as pure as possible and that means no crosses and not breeding related animals. If there should come a day when we cant get any more wc chams we need to do our best as hobbyists and breeders to keep bloodlines viable and free from breeding defects. I would be worried that by breeding realted chams you might have sterile offspring or weaker offspring than normal.

Is it possible to breed a blue bar ambanja to a red bar ambanja and get a high birth rate with no defects.
thanks.

Ambanja is Ambanja, the variance in colours are just differences within the same local. You can breed two red bars and get some off spring that show blue. It's not cross breeding to beed a blue bar ambanja with a daughter of a red bar.

For those interested in reading about inbreeding and line breeding, there are several good threads already on this forum you may find interesting - use the search function.

There is one bloodline of panthers in S.A and they are all inbred, which could explain the huge variation in colours and maybe could explain the different colours which make people think they are mix breeds.

Though there has never been any cases of babies being born with any problems what so ever.
