Any of you breed your own crickets (brown) if so could you help me please I want to start a coloney and I don't have a clue where to begin. I'm in the process of breeding mealworms atm but that's not exactly going well either lol. Thanks

I tried to raise crickets, but they never hatched. I was reading that some potting soil has insect growth inhibitors mixed in the soil, so I think thats why mine never hatched. So get some organic soil to use and just put a tray in with your adults and they will lay eggs in the soil. Cover, keep warm and moist and in 2-4 wks they should hatch (in theory). I have to get some organic soil and try again. There are great articles on chameleonnews.com that give you more detail. Good luck!:)

it realy depends on how many you want. at least 10 of each ( lay a few hundred each)
keep your laying bin in the keeper with crickets for a few days (use a clear container so u can see when its packed with eggs) and take it out or the males will try to eat the eggs , keep moist not soggy and they should hatch in a few weeks

personal iv never raised crickets there too smelly and noisy, but my dad useto keep a large plastic bin with a full colony goin in it , in his bathroom for his bearded dragons ( 20-50g? not sure pretty big) and he got away with just leaveing the egg box inside

but i seriously sudguest you dont do this. they will excape in ur house, the room will stink horribly too , and not to mention *cheep cheep*

if your aiming for pinheads id sudgest a fruitfly culture kit, they can last for mounths usaly, or any kind of flys and there stupid easy to keep and pretty prolific ( got one with my first cham 6 mounths ago i still have stuff to make more cultures and a culture goin, id sudguest keepin a few goin and cuting the food to like 1/2 of the directions ... they last too long usaly and just mold after a mounth or so)

and the mealworms.... you whould be better off raiseing silkworms/hornworms/superworms (much better for chams health from what i hear)

well they would be for my leopard gecko's to and they are good to leave in a dish inside the viv all the time so if they fancy a snack etc they can get one.

I started my SuperWorms breeding the other day... Got 2 small nuts and bolts containers from lowes that look like a little tackle box... I seperated one in each slot with a lil of that bran stuff they come in and shut them in the rubbermaid container that will soon be the beetles egg laying bin where it is dark... Hopefully they will pupate into beetles in the next couple weeks... Everything I have read said this was extremely easy so I'm giving a shot... I have teetered back and forth on the idea of breeding crickets for awhile... IMO they are the dirtiest most pain in the ass annoying feeder to handle. I am actually planning on having a lot of babies this summer in my outdoor habitat so I am planning ahead and starting as many different feeder colonies as possible. I really like the idea of the fruit flies...How do you make them flightless?

fruit flys can be bread to have no wings so they look like little ants, or they can have wings that are useless for flight

theres larger kinds too somone wrote something about bottle flys(2x the size of house flys?) in a post on this forum a few days ago , i dunno

heres a link to a place with fly kits http://www.edsflymeat.com/kits.htm
