Breeding, female questions...

Maybe I'm crazy, but I thought that I read somewhere about females retaining sperm or being able to lay multiple fertile clutches after only one mating. Is this accurate?

What I'm getting at is, what if I buy a female that has bred before and mate her with Walker? Could she produce fertile eggs from a previous mating or ?? Pardon my ignorance if this is outlandish, but I've been concerned about this and am just now getting around to asking. And no, I have not purchased a female as of yet.

Thanks for any help!

The answer is yes. It's a servival strategy. In the case a mated female was ever put in a position (possibly set adrift and landed on an island). If she has mated prior, it's possible for up to 3 clutches I have heard. I assume this would w enough to possibly establish a isolated population ?!?! (locales)!

In your case, you can hold on to her for about 5-6 months. If she hasn't laid in that time (or is showing receptive coloring) then I'd deem it safe to breed her and the offspring will be Walker's!

Thanks, Jon. That answers that. No previously mated females in my near future. Back to the drawing board.

Wow! I never thought of that happening when looking for a female to breed.. Max ,,, You definitely need to get a virgin, to assure you get Walker babies! ;)
Smart thinking!!

Lol. That's why they keep me around these parts. I'm not just all pictures, y'know! I can think too... :D

Ive gotten 3 good clutches out of one mating. The number of viable eggs will decline but you still get some in the retained clutches.

Ive always wondered if you breed one that is holding retained sperm if you will get some eggs fertilized by that and some from the new breeding of another male. If you dont get a virgin you can always just wait it out for her to lay all infertile eggs then breed.

If you are looking to breed asap get a adult female for around 200-250$. You can grow out a hatchling or juvie. This will cost 100-200$ but will set you back at least one year, one year in food etc. So question is: Do you want to see eggs hatch in one year or 2 years?

Thanks for all of the input. I'm looking to breed as soon as possible, but I need the right, healthy female to start with. I don't mind getting an adult, I'd just like to get my hands on a virgin adult.

I now have many obstacles in my way:

1. Too young
2. Related to Ranger/SoKool/Walker
3. Females that have been already bred (my concerns mentioned above and health concerns)

I wouldn't buy a female that has been bred. Mine had 3 clutches from one mating. I don't think they would have eggs from both because I don't think they are receptive when retaining sperm, but I'm not 100% on that. But you don't know if she was supplemented properly while gravid before you got her, and there is so much that could go wrong. Get a young one. Yes, you have to wait longer, but wax on, wax off, Grasshopper. It's the only way to know how your female was cared for to have the best chances for a healthy clutch.

Yeah, the more I ponder it over, the more I'm leaning towards not purchasing "used" goods. I'll just have to wait for a nice juvie or an honest person with an adult that hasn't been bred.

hahahaha yeah I think we established we both have walker babies, I was looking for a male, you were looking for a female. We found out we had the same taste in quality Amabanja's. Best of luck to you Maxxtu in finding a unrelated female. Your Sire is amazing.

Lol! You meant to say that we have Ranger babies and that Ranger is an amazing sire! ;) Thanks, man! I'm still fighting the good fight!! :D

All of my ambi females go receptive between fertile clutches so they definitely can breed with multiple males. In about 6 months I will be able to tell you how the eggs turn out since I have a clutch from Cpt Kirk/Iris to hatch any day now, and another clutch Scotty/Iris that were laid 2 months ago. Tons of red between the 2 males but it will be really interesting to see what the offspring turn out like. Iris gets bright red lipstick when she is receptive so its so easy to tell its funny.
Having said all that, I would plan on getting younger female that has not been bred for the same concerns that Shauna mentioned.

I'm deffo off of the preciously bred females bandwagon. Virgin gals or young ones that I raise up. :)
