So for Christmas my parents got me 2x2s, L brackets and screws.

To be honest im not worried about appearance, he just needs a bigger cage NOW.
I was also just going to staple the mesh to the 2x2s but making sure to keep it safe for him and me.

That was awesome of your parents!! I would suggest looking at threads that deal with custom built enclosures. Since you are trying to get him in something bigger quickly, I would just build a simple frame with a door on one side. With 2x2's I would probably double them up for the purpose of rigidity.

That's what the L brackets are for, the 2x2s are pretty rigid I cant bend the with my hands and I'm no wimpy arm.
My dad suggested the middle cross pieces (as he is a carpenters son and was worried about bowing.)

Right, I guess my concern was more along the basis of degradation. Raw wood and the amount of moisture needed for a cham can cause some crazy warping. But, since you dad is the son of a carpenter, I'm sure he has some techniques for stabilization. Please post a pic when you're done and good luck!! I like the profile pic by the way!

Unfortunately the pic is not mine.
I was planning to seal it with a water proof sealant.
