Calling all Pygmy People

I have been acquiring a lot of Chameleons the last couple of days. So last night I figured I wouldn't stop there.

I picked up a couple WC Brev's at the show. I think I got two males :(. They are so fun to watch. Not to mention the cute factor. My wife fell in love. She wanted to get some more of them. So..............

We bought some CB Rieppeleon brevicaudatus from FLChams. 4 Female and two male.

I have a few questions for you pygmy keeps.

#1 housing - Should I get a big 50+ GAL and keep them all together? or Two 20 Gal and do 1.2 pairs?

#2 What type of plants are everyone using for their Pygs?

#3 This question is about my WC : has anyone treated them for parasites? If so how and how long does it take?

Any other advise or information would be very helpful. I have read through FLChams care sheet and just about everything else I could find.

I wany some pygs too They are so cool sadly i don't know much about them but I do know lots of stuff on the other types of chameleonsXD

I decided to go with two 20 gal. That way I can breed two unrelated pairs.

I would love to hear people input on plants.

i have a lone pygmy.. he was all by himself in a 65 gallon (completely unneccessary) with a 2 1/2 foot ficus which he loved.. now hes in a 20 tall with a mini ficus from black jungle which he has honestly never left.. the branches are good for climbing and the leaves are good for drinking
and either way would have worked as far as the enclosure the only thing about them all in a 50 gallon is the males can be aggressive toward each other and close observation is needed

Thanks for the info. Yeah I thought the two 20's would be better.

I have two males that I bought this weekend that are wild caught. They are in a 10 gal. I thought it was a pair. :(

I will probably be looking for a home or a couple of WC females really soon.

it might be a good idea to keep WC and CB separate so the 2 20 gal might be the way to go. on the other hand, you got 2 malesso you might have a little bit of an issue there. If u plan on keeping them together just make sure the tank is dense enough with plants so they can get away from eachother if necessary. You may also want to keep a close eye on them to make sure one doesnt get bullied around. If you plan on breeding them you may want to get a small breeder cage and put them in there for a period of time to get things done. This might lessen the risk of contaminating CBs with parasites but it does not eliminate the possiblity. It would be best to remove WC fecal matter best if keeping with CB... The best thing to do is check for parasites at the vet and get rid of them

Thanks for your help

I am getting 6 CB total. 2 male and 4 female. I am putting each set of 1.2 in 20 gal tanks.

The two WC I have already have their own home. I was just curious if anyone had treated a pyg for parasites?

What plants do you like for the enclosure?

Anyone know where to get springtails?

ive asked for springtails for a while and no one seems to really know. ive heard that www.lllreptile.com has them for dartfrogs but i never found out (but i plan too!) I use ficus because its very twiggy and leafy, umbrella plants, and pothos vines because theyr usually dense and they like to hide in there. ive used small pygmy palm trees in my outside enclosures and they like to hide in those too. Theres one more but i cant quite remember the name of it at the moment. ive always seen them in ficus plants so those are definately a good choice since they are relatively easy to take care of. Pothos vines would be a good idea to hide and keep the cage somewhat dense. they grow fast too!

springtail

Josh's frogs sell springtails. In my experience if you don't need them right away, they come by themselves in wet pitmoss. That was in my tanks.

also if you do get a ficus they respond well to less watering if you spray the plant.. when i watered it every 2-3 days it seemed to be withering somewhat even with good drainage.. after adjusting to watering about once a week i see many shoots growing and they are poking through the reptarium screen
another thing is to use perlite and vermerculite(i think thats the one) free soil

How do u treat pygs if they do have parasites? Seems like any medication would be too strong and I'd be afraid to force feed, u might squish them!

Thats kinda what I was thinking.

All six pygs arrived today and are in their new home. Everyone found a favorite spot and settled in. They are tiny little ones. I will post some pics of them and their enclosure tonight sometime.

pygmy medical instruments! mini scalpel please lol
but medicine amounts relate to weight which for a pygmy is a very small amount
