From my bug guide that looks to be a Migratory grasshopper (Melanoplus sanguinipes), from the shape, the wings, and the orange, stripped thighs. Here is a website with more photos, so see if it looks to match up: http://bugguide.net/node/view/70762

My book doesn't mention anything about them being poisonous to eat. And I can't find anything immediately online either.

Still, I would keep the insect in a quarantine container, feeding it washed leafy veggies and insect gutload if you have it. Oranges work well too :) Just make sure everything is pesticide free, this way the insect will flush out any harmful foods it ate previously to you capturing it. While the insect itsel may not be poisonous, there is a large variety of plants a grasshopper could eat that could hurt your pet. Just be careful and feed after 4-5 days.

Hope this helps.

They are completely safe. Just catch them out of a pesticide free area and they are perfectly safe to feed.. They eat lawn grass, dandelions, clover, etc. They are not too picky. They are high in protein and low in fat and make a great addition to your feeder rotation. Many keepers here catch them and feed them.
