My cat took my little baby chameleon out of his cage not sure for how long but I found them both alone in a carpeted room upstairs... He was terrified and black in color when I found him, he has been fine the past couple of days he just has so many scratches and I'm not sure if chams can scar ? Or if I should treat his skin with anything any help appreciated! image.jpg

Just examine him for the next week or so. He looks fine. Maybe just a regular check up and tell them the situation. A simple clamp or lock with prevent this from happening again.

How did your cat get to your cham? Find out and stop it.

Bruises on cham skin show up as dark grey or black marks. If they are bruises they should disappear in a day or so. If he has any punctures or cuts they should get some OTC Polysporin on each. Don't use the type that contains pain reliever. Cat bites and scratches can get infected very easily.

I am sorry to sound mean, but do you have any idea how very lucky you are? Most encounters between a cat and a Cham end with a dead Cham.

I would make completely sure the cat can't get at your Cham or his cage. I would lock the cat out of the room as that tiny cham will be terrified if it sees the cat.

No! Lee Dragon moral of story is to be a responsable pet owner and stuff like this won't happen!

Thanks

Yup thanks everyone accidents do happen no matter how responsible of a pet owner you are. I have latches and locks on his cage and he is in a room where the cat doesn't have access to him anymore. I was really only asking for help about his scratches not prevention because this obviously won't happen again now that they are separated.

Hey man, I had saved a kitten form being sent to the pound where it would have been killed otherwise. We had a bad stray cat population in the town I live in but has since dropped down. Any way, I had my cham about 2 years at that point and she was about 4 feet from the floor and the top of her cage was about 6. When my kitten was little before he got fixed he would here noise in the cage and attack the plastic bags on this side. It wasn't long before he saw what was making the noise and would stare her from the floor outside the cage. He tried once or twice to jump threw the cage and get her but after being on lock down for a while he realized it was just part of my room and has lost interest completely. I've never taken the chameleon out with my cat in the room and I don't plan on it for fear of causing stress to my cham and myself. But now that your cat has gotten a hold of it I am not sure hes gonna lose interest in it.

leedragon, the problem is not have cats, I have two and have never had this happen ever. The problem is that the cats should never have contact to the same room of the chameleon let alone the cage and the actual chameleon.

Be really careful about infection. Cat scratches/bites often cause serious infections. If it were me, I would call a reptile vet to ask if the chameleon should be put on a prophylactic course of antibiotics. I know that is standard treatment for bird/cat interactions. I don't know how susceptible chameleons are to infections from cat scratches/bites, but I know birds are VERY susceptible and often die from a tiny nick you can't even see.

If you don't want to go to a vet, original formula (without the pain meds) Polysporin or Neosporin are better than nothing. Good luck, keep us posted.

give it some time it will happen, cats are cats thats what they do. but cudos for not letting the cat in the same room as the chameleon, have have seen people introducing the animal to the cat, that is irresponsible from what I can see
