Ceramic heater

i've just read on another link that you shouldnt use ceramic heaters.

why is this?

i had a vet tell me this is the best possible heat you can give to a chameleon.

i use one that is on a thermostat & my veiled sits under it basking.

or this something else i need to change?

danni x

Chameleons associate white light with basking heat (think sun). A regular household bulb in a clamp lamp does the trick and provides UVA. Ceramic heaters are more suited say, if you had them in a cold location at night and needed to keep some heat on the cage. However, heating a room is far better than heating a cage.
You need live plants in your chameleons cage, and UVB is not going to keep them alive-you need the UVA for that purpose also.

thanks - my new srip light hood has a space for a light, so will get that sorted tomorrow x

i would reccomend raising the temp in the room rather than the enclosure. like a space heater or somthing. it is 17degrees here right now, i use a small space heater with thermostat. it keeps room at 70 and doesnt use much power. higher room temp means less basking light heat to reach desired high temp. they will need to be able to get out of basking heat also. http://www.amazon.com/DeLonghi-DFH132-SafeHeat-Fan-Heater/dp/B00006WNN6/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1231080520&sr=1-3 i use this one, it works great. you may not have available there but you get the idea.

at the moment my heating is on 24hours a day, so night time temps in his viv are in the low 60's, when it warms up abit the heating will be off at nightk so will keep my eye on things
