Cham to human illness ??

In all my research about chams I haven't seen anything about this (and a friend posed this question to me). Can people catch anything from chams? Disease or illness in anyway? I have 2 young children (3rd on the way) and it is a good question for their safety.

There is a remote chance for salmonella passing between a cham and humans, but this is true for all herps and birds. More common in species like water turtles and amphibians due to wet conditions or wet skin or if your kid kisses or puts the animal in its mouth. If you teach your kids to wash their hands after handling the cham or cleaning its cage you should be fine. Salmonella gets a lot of hype in the media but its not all that easy to get from a pet.

100% agree!! You also have a better chance of contracting Campylobacter from chicken you eat (if you eat chicken), they are absolutely covered in this GI pathogen, more so than Salmonella. So wash, wash and wash! Not with antibacterial soap either, just plain soap and just remember to sing the ABC's because that is the amount of time needed for hand washing to get thru the bacterial cell wall :D

Cook to an internal temp of 165 and you should be fine.

Teach your children to wash their hands after handling animals, and that should reduce risks to near-nothing

Alcohol gel straight after, our 2 year olds like the feeling of the gel and I make it a fun game to wash after being with the chams ;)
