It has been a long time since I have posted anything.
I have tried to post images and information about the Chamaeleo calyptratus calcarifer for years, but have always been told "no such thing". Now they are being recognized. These are the only Veiled chameleons that I have raised since 2005. I can share a lot of photos of them.
They are from the southern, western side of Saudi Arabia unlike the regular species which come from the upper elevation.
Their behavior is different in that they are curious about people, other animals and their surroundings.
They are less fearful
They enjoy being held
They enjoy meeting people.
I take my everywhere with me and they stay their brilliant color regardless of who or what they see. They don't shrink and try to hide.
Unlike the main species of the Chamaeleo calyptratus which have the tall casque on top of their head. These have a huge tall casque and are from the upper elevation of Yemen.
Here is some documentation about them.
The two subspecies of veiled chameleons are Chamaeleo calyptratus calyptratus and Chamaeleo calyptratus calcarifer. The main difference between the two is the size of the casque, or fleshy fin on the top of their head.
Subspecies distribution
• Chamaeleo calyptratus calyptratus: Lives in the more humid regions of Yemen
• Chamaeleo calyptratus calcarifer: Inhabits the western arid coast of Saudi Arabia
Subspecies / Taxonomy / Etymology
There are 2 subspecies recognized. The Veiled Chameleon was first described by Peters in 1870 as Chamaeleo calyptratus, he also described a second subspecies, the Short-casqued Veiled Chameleon (Chamaeleo calyptratus).
Veiled Chameleon (Chamaeleo calyptratuswas - Peters, 1870) - From the 2 subspecies this one has a higher crest or casque.
Short-casqued Veiled Chameleon (Chamaeleo calyptratus calcarifer - Peters, 1871) - As its name implies this subspecies has a smaller crest or casque than that of the Veiled Chameleon subspecies.

All of these chameleons are those that I have personally raised. I study their behavior and intelligence. I live with my chams, I don't just keep them in cages.
