Chameleon gets trapped in its own tail

Hello everyone,
I'm wondering if anyone can tell me if it's normal for a chameleon to get tangled in it's tail. We've had him for about 8 months and I haven't noticed it until recently. He'll be walking and when he goes to turn around or move to another branch in his cage, he'll get tangled in his tail as if his tail has a mind of it's own. What's concerning is that he's almost fallen several times because of this. I just observed him go to his bowl to get a cricket and while chewing he somehow got tangled and almost fell. He's even grabbed his tail instead of a branch which is even more confusing because it just tangles him more. I've also noticed him hanging out on a branch with one hand free and he'll be moving the hand. It almost looks like he's moving his hand involuntarily. Any ideas as to what's going on with him?

As far as I know Chameleon use its tail to be balanced n secure on a branch,he probably trying to reach for another location of the branch without untangling his tail in the first place,I wouldn't worry too much on that.
