chameleon on UVB/UVA

Hello there!

I'm basically raising this question for I haven't seen it answered anywhere else.
My veiled during the day walks around his enclosure happy and follical, but when the night comes, he tends to sleep on the highest parte he can find, that is the UVB/UVA tube lamp.

During the day he never goes up there. My question is, if when the light is up he climbs onto it, is there any harm that can be done? the light doesn't heat more than almost nothing, so heating burns are out of the equation.

Another thing, I'm building a 130cm high and 120 cm in lengh terrarium, what are the UVA/UVB that you recommend? 5.0 or 10.0?

thanks a lot!

Howdy,

If I have got it right, your UVB tube is inside the enclosure. The closer he gets to the tube's surface, the higher the UVB energy that he is exposed to. A safe yet effective distance is 6"-12" for a ZooMed Reptisun 5.0 linear tube. The energy level can be quite high at 0" distance and it is possible that it could be at a level that could cause eye problems and possibily skin problems too. The worst offending tubes will cause skin burns at what would have been a safe distance with other tubes.

My recommendation is to set things up in a way to maintain the minimum distance spec'd.

I'm not sure I fully understand you question, but I will try my best.
Is you light on the inside or outside of the cage?
If it is on the ouside and he is climbing on the screen that shouldnt be a problem.(if it is turned off)
Flouresent tube lights dont put out much heat.
In you new cage you should be fine using a 5.0.
What type of basking light are you providing and what is the temperature?
The flouresent 5.0 emit UVB and a standard house bulb emits UVA.
If you want a tighter beam you can buy a bulb from a petstore.
Stay away from black lights and red lights.
Chameleons dont recognize these as a heat source.

If you have any other question ask.

That size (51"H x47"L) could use a ZooMed Reptisun 5.0 48" tube placed on the screen top. Set-up plants and vines so that he can get within 6"-12" of the tube's surface (no glass or plastic in-between).
