do you have to get neosporin from a vet or from the drugstore? can you only get Silvadene from the vet?

thanks

I think Silvadene is by presciption, but I'm not certain. It's not just for chameleons- humans use it, too. I would say ask a pharmacist at a grocery store, but here we are looking at a 3 day weekend. Neosporin you can get off the shelf, and I used that on chams before when I didn't know about other stuff. It didn't seem to have much of an adverse affect. In fact, come to think of it, I used it on a burnt cham we rescued. It did gum up his scales, though, because it is petroleum based. This caused later problems when his skin tried to shed.

Silvadene is normally by prescription only.

Another thought may be a plant called Aloe....best used if freashly picked and not the stuff that comes out of the tube. Aloe has an antiseptic quality to it too.

In humans, Hydration is very key. so I would expect that would be especially true with a smaller volume animal.

Has the skin started to grow back?

silavdine cream - it's worth paying for a vet visit just for the prescription. Tell them you want a large tube! It's the best antiseptic for these animals. In about the last 8 years, I've used (on my animals' cuts scrapes, burns and such) nothing but an antiseptic rinse and silvadine cream. Never lost an animal to infection, never had an infection spread, in fact.

Silvadene cream is the miracle stuff. It works!
get it from your vet or if you are friends with your doctor.
This is one of the things that should be in your chameleon medicine cabinet.

Peddro,

If you are stuck (no access to silvadene) try Bacitracin zinc its one of the ingredients in neosporin its next to it on the shelf usually). Neomycin the first of 3 ingredients in neosporin has propensity for irritation and is unnecessay so better to get Bacitracin and see vet as soon as possible. the wound itself could be infected and may need oral antibiotic as well

Human burn centers have stopped using silvadene because of its propensity to kill normal growing cells as well as bacteria actually slowing healing. the 2 major burn centers in cleveland only use bacitracin. obviously i am not a vet and am unaware if the problem holds true in pets, but this has slowly change over the last 5 years in humans and i would not be suprised if it moves to the vet pratices soon.

good luck

Sean

it hasn't started to grow back yet. i'm already going to the vet for my dog today so maybe they'll let me have some:) i'll pick up some neosporin too, just cuz there's alot of mixed opinions on here:confused: really don't want an infection to start:eek:

thanks guys

As most have said silvadene is a proven cmmodity and definitely better than no treatment so if possible get it

good luck
