Chlorine in water

Do i need to continue to use distilled water for misting and dripping, or can filtered tap water work? I ask this because i do have a filter on my kitchen sink, but i dont think it removes chlorine.

I use reptisafe. Its quick and easy.

If you're really concerned, you should be able to look up levels of all the chemicals in your water from your water utility company.

chameleons need some mineral traces in water.
distilled water is devoid of all necessary nutrients.

i have a fish aquarium also, do you think i can use the same chlorine remover? Also, whats wrong with distilled water?

This would worry me much more than the chlorine. It has been known about for a while but for some reason is in the news recently.

distilled water screws up osmosis (i think) . It has nothing in it, just like deionized water, it is too pure. Do your cham and yourself a favor and buy an ro system, you can get them on ebay for under 100 bucks now. You would be surprised at the allowable levels of contaminants and metals in tap water. Also there are several pharmaceuticals and hormones found in tap water....not good for you or your chameleon.

Reyes, your site mentions giving chameleons Distilled water as a "Do"
DO: give your chameleon Reverse Osmosis or Steam Distilled water.
Distilled is a absolute no no.

Do you live in an old house with rusty pipes?
I have never used anything but water straight from the tap with no problems.

Not all city water is the same. It can even vary at the same location. I drill water wells and sometimes they can also vary from one house to the next. I would say most of the time your water will be fine but there are some cases where I wouldn't use it.

Brad's right. Unless you have an exceptional issue with your water (well issues or old pipes), you shouldn't have a problem. In fact, using a dechlorinator in a misting system can be more problematic. I had to take out and rinse each freaking nozzle after one week of using a dechlorinator. That small amount of chlorine will keep the hoses and nozzles much cleaner - less algae and bacterial slime. And the lizards don't seem to mind it one bit.

the recent findings showing chemicals and such in tap water are pretty much alarming just fo rthe fact that our society uses so much medication, that it shows up in our water supply! Really, one part per trillion of plutonium probably won't hurt anyone, let alone a trace of tylenol.

i've kept chameleons on untreated water for about 15 years. The only issue was in NJ, where the chlorine was higher. Seemed they had larger amounts of salts around their noses back then. Or, it could have been because back then, everyone was saying they were desert animals and they got water much less than they do now...

Chlorine evaporates pretty quickly. If you fill a pitcher of water with chlorinated water and let it sit out, most will be gone the next day.

interesting read about the +/- of reverse osmosis and distilled water, although they seem to be favoring distillers (probably because they sell them), they bring up some interesting (and most likely debatable) negative points about the RO process.
