Clarence the Chubster

Clarence, the wild grey tree frog my grandparents found in their house, is doing great. He's quite the little chubby guy. I try to put him on a diet, but the way he "face plants" into food and then shoves it in his mouth with both hands is just too hilarious :)

I seriously love him. I'm thinking about upgrading his viv. The 12x12x18 is just too small. I want to move up to the 18x18x24 and do a fully planted viv. I've been reading through the Pygmy Cham enclosure blog incessantly. Anyone have any tree frog specific recommendations for me?

He is adorable! :) Farva (my oldest son named him, lol) looks a almost identical to your guy. I need to get him a real viv, too. Although his temp set up is working well, it's harder to see him through the opaque plastic. Glass would be much nicer. Our guy does the sneak attack on his prey. He likes to hide underneath his log, and snag a bug like a jack in the box. It's so much fun to watch!
If you need hydroballs for your set up, the cheapest way I've found, is to go to a local hydroponics store.
I've used landscape fabric or screen for my separation between substrate and drainage, they both work well. I don't have a preference of one over the other, it's usually whatever I have on hand. I also like using isopods and springtails for a cleaning crew. They're easy to culture and do a pretty good job. I have them in all my pygmy and gecko set ups, too.

You know, I have an amazing hydroponics store really close, and I've never even been. That's a good idea! Putting down fabric would let me change out the soil if I needed to also... Thanks!

You're very welcome. :) I can't wait to see Clarences new digs. A planted viv is a lot of fun. I honestly get as much enjoyment out of setting one up and watching the plants grow as I do watching the animals. Be sure to take pics, so you can track how your plants do. It's interesting to watch what does well and the transformation over time.

What a cute little guy! I really miss the tree frogs we used to get in Florida, I would have 5 on the glass door at any given time.

Eek! Look what the hubby bought me for my birthday! Clarence is going to be so happy (in frog terms, anyway). It's almost 3 times the size of what he has now.

I'm going to have a good time getting this all set up :D

Nice! Looks like the Exo-Terra size that I have all planted for my Crested Gecko. Is it the 18x18x24 that you wanted?

Yep! It's huge! I'm going to need a new table, lol. It's very nice too, much nicer than the zoomed i have now. I love the double doors. I'm going to repurpose the smaller viv for my pitcher plant.

Clarence is awesome!

Clarence is pretty awesome. I wish I could take credit, but he came to us aweseome, and we can only hope a small piece of his awesomeness stays with us when he goes. :D

I wouldn't normally have kept a wild animal, but I was worried he wouldn't be heathy enough to hibernate this winter. Now I just love him too much!

New supplies for the new viv! Clarence is getting all decked out.

Lowes had tons of frog-safe plants, lots to choose from, I was really surprised. I bought an elephant ear, some midheight ground cover in pink, and some sheet moss (rehydrating currently) to fill in around his pothos. I have a low growing fern coming, too.

A new larger water dish, which will be much appreciated as he does enjoy a good soak. New cork bark tube! I may never see him again, but so long as he is happy :) New lights are on the way.

New soil for the planted viv, and as soon as the hydroton balls show up (probably tomorrow), I will start getting all that together! I'd like to let the new viv get settled before I add Clarence, but I hate to take his pothos away and leave him with nowhere to hide. I'll have to figure out my transfer plan.

Ok, will do a photo shoot tomorrow. :) I think they're the cutest darn things! The singing always cracks me up.

Have u thought of doing a fogger in there I've seen some really cool tree frog set ups with fog machines of and a water fall :)

Gray tree frogs don't want humidity consistently that high, so no fogger for Clarence. It would look cool, though :)

Yeah I'm not big into frogs yet but I will be getting there soon our breeder has successfully bred Vietnamese mossy tree frogs just waiting for them to mature here's a pic
