Clawing at Mulch Part 2

So my juvenile veiled chameleon (Male) has been clawing at the corner of his terrarium and mulch and newspaper. I know I am going to get severely criticized because he is in a glass terrarium, but the Exo Terra ones has specific air flow designs to allow proper airflow, as there is an air strip at the bottom and a screen cover/ lid. Also, I know people will freak out because I have mulch in the bottom, but it keeps his terrarium more humid. People do not like any type of substrate as chameleons can ingest it, but mine feeds out of a plastic tub where the crickets are fine; the only way they are getting out is by him eating them. His colors are beautiful and his behavior is normal.

My main question is relating to his behavior. Why is he walking on the ground more often/ clawing/ pulling at the mulch and newspaper?

Attached are photos. (Set up, him just now wandering around, and him clawing last night)
