Cricket sizes and quantities for a baby veiled

Hi Guys,

I have my first veiled baby coming at the end of this week and I'm trying to anticipate the ?s that are going to pop up and try to keep things as cut and dry as I can.

what cricket size and how many daily should I be feeding a baby 2.5 month old veiled? I know the general rule is nothing bigger than the space between their eyes but I haven't seen the little guy yet. I grabbed the image below from Reeves Cricket Ranch cause I knew they had a size chart. I was told by the breeder (lancecham) that he has just switched them to medium crickets (don't know from where). Well what size is medium?

I feed my bearded dragon what most stores call medium which ranges from about 3.5 to 5.5 weeks old.

Up until about 5 months they can eat as much as they can eat. It usually comes out to be between 12-20.

As for the size, a good rule of thumb is that the feeder shouldnt be larger then the space between the jaw.

My (2) 2.5 mo Veileds and panther ate 2 week olds.

Since you got your cham from Lance, follow what he's been feeding and supplimenting with to keep things running smoothly.

I agree. Lance is a good care taker, what he tells you should be followed.

BTW where are you located?

I just bought a Cham from lance as well. I buy small/medium crickets for him. They are 3 to 4 week ones according to that chart. I offer him 7 or 8 in the morning............He will eat all of them in one sitting. Then around 6 or so I will offer him like 4 more. Sometimes he eats all of them sometimes he doesnt. I cup feed him, so it seems that Lance did the same as well becasue the first day he had the concept down and EVERY morning he is waiting by his cup for me to put the crickets in!! Hope this help u out!:D

OK so how many crickets should the little guy eat in a day

Echoing what others have said, give the chameleon the opportunity to eat all that it wants.

When talking about cricket size/age, it can be confusing. Many cricket suppliers go strictly by size, or list size and age, but when ordering, you need to be ordering size. Reason being is that cricket growth is highly temperature dependent. Crickets raised in temps in the upper 80's (optimal for growth) will grow twice as fast as those raised in the upper 70's. Note: This may be reason to "cool" crickets once received from a supplier so as to hold them at a certain size for as long as possible. Depending on who is supplying and when, it can make for some misconceptions and problems. When someone describes something as "medium", etc., it helps to ask for the specific size they are referring to. Good luck with the new arrival. Lance is a very reliable person to deal with :)

Jared,
Since there are various ways to buy crickets in reagrds to size, such as medium and 3 to 4 week old crickets, it can still be confusing as what one store calls medium size crickets.
But if you go by length, that should be easier. The medium crickets I get are around 3/4 of an inch.
You boy has been powering down the food in the last 1.5 weeks and has grown 3/4 of inch during this time. He is now over 6 inches at just over 2 months. So he can easily handle medium crickets.

Thanks to all the "shout outs" from everyone. I appreciate it.

How do you mean u cup feed I put the crickets in the viv then sometimes he can't find them to eat them

Cup feeding just means that you attach a deli cup or something to the side of the enclosure and put the crickets in there. Crickets can't get out (for the most part) and you can keep better track of how much is being eaten.

There are also more elaborate feeding cups.
