Crickets are WTF

Dude I have a ton of crickets like 50 in a 10 gallon tank and every day I find a new cricket missing one hind leg then they soon die....Why is this happening?

hmmm....seems more a "food" question....I'm sure this will be moved.

You seem inordinately in tune with your crickets. I buy them by the thousand and I have no idea when one loses a leg.

If you are getting a lot of die off, I suspect it's a lack of ventilation. They need good airflow to survive.

I guess you could post pictures of your cricket set up and we could offer suggestions.

Lol! :hide: I have zero ventilation in my cricket bin (30g). Only time it gets vented is the 2 times a day I open it to pick a lucky 50 to feed off. Maybe I got a batch of hardy crix. Maybe in just lucky and it will catch up to me. Just havent had time to make a vent yet. I dont water them either. Lol

But to the OP this time of year. Especially if you live somewhere that gets cold. You tend to get poor quality crickets with larger than normal dieoffs. What are you feeding? 50 crickets don't really last that long. Even with one Cham

You'll find they live much longer if you get them in a ventilated situation. If you're just buying 50, well....they'll be gone so fast it probably doesn't matter much, but if you're buying bulk, ventilation is good.

Here's my set up:

Protein Balance

I agree with ferretinmyshoes. Ventilation is important, but if legs are disappearing, cannibalism seems to be the main issue here. Make sure the crickets have plenty of surface area so they're not walking on top of each other (an egg carton is sufficient for 50 crickets). Even with plenty of space, they'll continue to eat body parts if they are protein deficient. There's a delicate balance between providing enough protein for your crickets and avoiding too much protein and fat for your cham. I've had the most success with a multi-veggie mash mixed with coconut oil and nutritional yeast.
