Crickets eating styrofoam egg enclosure

Had to remove these crates from the enclosure. Just using the pressed cardboard type now. Anyone else have this issue? Could not find when I searched forums.

pretty sure that doesn't answer your question... i just wouldn't bother with the styrofoam. the cardboard is the way to go and the styrofoam could be a potential hazard especially if the crix are eating it.

yes they will eat styrofoam! When I got my first batch of crickets I did not know any better and put their food on a styrofoam plate. They ate all the food as well as most of the plate. I had to let some 400 plus or so crickets loose as I was afraid my chameleon would indirectly get the styrofoam from eating the crickets! The anoles and ringtails in my yard had a field day. I fed them off to them little by little. I did not find any dead lizards so I guess I was being paranoid about the styrofoam. Alls I kept thinking was I gutloaded my crickets with styrofoam! Lesson learned!

Lack of food may lead to the crickets eating the styrofoam or if the smell of the food is on the styrofoam they will eat it too. Spinach is a poor choice for gutloading as it binds the calcium. You can gutload/feed the insects with a wide assortment of greens and veggies such as collards, dandelion greens, kale, endive, escarole, mustard greens, carrots, squash, sweet potato, zucchini, sweet red pepper, etc.
