Dangles falls asleep on me

So I notice that since I got her yesterday and she's been very comfortable now she's a baby so I noticed that she or he likes to be rubbed on the head before bed. So today I took her out before probably around nine and she was crawling on me for a while, so I put her back in the cage and she just kept crawling up the vines so I took her back out. After that she just fell asleep and woke up after a few minutes looking at me so I just decided to rub her head again next thing you know she fell asleep and then she curled up her tail 10 minutes later. No matter how fast they move her if I move my hand while I'm typing this shes still sleeping.

Welcome to the forums! For chameleons, always make sure their parasite load isn't too high by getting a fecal done and getting a check up from a herp vet. Also, chameleons are not like cats and dogs... they should not be petted often if ever. The closing of her eyes when you pet her head could be in response to you petting her certainly, but it does not necessarily mean that it calms and puts her to sleep as a result. Also, how do you know if it is a she? Just curious. PetCo and PetSmart are well known for not taking the best care of some of the animals they sell, especially chameleons, so hopefully they got you set up with the correct appliances to get started.

Again, welcome, and if you have any questions, there are a ton of people on here who are extremely knowledgable and very willing to help (y)

Again, most people would say no to the petting. Some people say to NEVER even handle them. It all depends on who you ask; there's a member on here who kisses her chams!

Thanks !
And actually they said he/she is too young so I'm not sure if it's a boy or girl that's why I decided with the name Dangles since it likes to dangle from the cage upside down lol.
I put her back in the cage and woke her up from my finger.. She didn't go right back to sleep tho. She's just looking around now.

Her falling asleep on your hand could very well be stress induced. If you're handling her a lot and "petting" her, she could be getting so stressed that she shuts down her body and goes to sleep. I recommend waiting at least a month before trying to handle her. If she crawls onto your arm or hand willingly, then that's fine. But you shouldn't pull her out of her cage. That's her safe zone and home, and probably scares her when you do so. Could you upload some pics of her enclosure? What are you feeding her?

Yeah it's like in the horror movies when the victim knows they are going to die so they close their eyes and tell themselves it isn't real, that's what Dangles is doing. You petting her head is like the killer tracing a knife edge down the victims face.

Veileds' genders can be determined immediately, on their back feet should be tarsal spurs if they are male, no spurs should be seen if they are female.

Welcome to the forums! I would recommend you give your new chameleon time to settle in. 1-2 weeks w/o handling would do just fine. Chameleons take their time to get used to things and need alot of space to do so. They aren't like our common pet mammals that enjoy being cuddled with I'm afraid, thats why they will do better as display animals. I handle my on chameleon quite often but its always when he climbs onto me and its only when I move him between his free range and enclosure. I never force him unless he tries to fall asleep in his free range.
Good luck with your new chameleon

Welcome to the world of chameleons, it's a steep learning curve and you should start by forgetting everything petco told you about chameleons. Read up on the caresheets on this site, chances are your going to have to rehab your chameleon petco doesn't take good care of them. Like others said your Cham is not sleeping but closing its eyes due to stress. Get used to watching the chameleon in its cage and letting it watch you, handling will come at a later date of the Chams choosing. First thing you'll want to do after reading caresheets is establish a source for variety of feeders and start supplementing correctly. Post some more pics and we can tell you sex and approximate age.

My veiled chameleon wants nothing but to be on my haiir..top of my head and I hv 2 Immaculate expensive cages one inside one out both w hibiscus trees and she is fed wax horned and superwoman plus crickets she has bonded well with me I hv Ray's reptiles since I was 12 I was told that chameleons word not good pets by a herpetology asts for children so I waited and I waited and now I have the perfect set up I cannot have children so I have a bearded dragon a hairless dog a.k.a
Mexican xolo But any reptile place that I've taken her 2 or I or any places they all say I've never seen a chameleon be that attached to someone she comes on a command she hangs on the my tope and watches TV with me! And she coos all the time:):)

You said..."she comes on a command"... They have a limited range of hearing and don't understand words....so how could that be? They'll come looking for food though....or looking to get out of the cage.

You said..."she hangs on the my tope and watches TV with me! And she coos all the time:):)"...I don't know what you mean by coos but chameleons don't do that either. Could she have a respiratory infection? If she's out of her cage a lot, what's the temperature where she is sitting with you? Veileds do vibrate though.
