Deremensis mating

This year I bought deremensis for the first time. I have a young CB or CH pair from the same clutch (I will not breed them together of course) and an adult WC pair. The WC pair was sub-adult when I got them. The male's horns were still quite small and his lips still green, but the latter would change gradually over the next few months. The first three photo's show the gradual change of the color of his lips:

The female:

I didn't think I would be able to start breeding them until next year, but a few weeks ago, the male started to behave differently. Instead of being calm and patient like a 'normal' deremensis, he became VERY active. He kept walking around, sometimes trying to walk 'through the glass' of his terrarium. I read about this and knew it could very well indicate he was looking for a mate.
I placed him on a branch of my small free range set-up (I don't keep any chameleons on it permanently, but it looks nice and can be useful when I want to redecorate a terrarium etc.) where he calmed down. I figured it wouldn't hurt to check his response towards the female and vice versa, so I placed her on a branch too (± 1,5 meter away from the male). Well, their responses were pretty clear. The male started head-bobbing right away and the female showed lots of black spots, but didn't move away from the male or showed any agression (and she's pretty agressive towards other chameleons...). I noticed that the male held his head up in a 30-45 degree angle while he approached the female. He kept doing this until he got on top of the female and did it every time they mated -four times during three different (consecutive) days.

Hopefully she will do well during her gravid period, but I'm confident about it :)
Anyway, I believe they are a pretty good match: ;)

Haha you could have given that advice a day later then. I believe today is the last day for this month's entries :)

Ferdy,

That last pic is really amazing. Good luck with the gravid female and eventually the eggs. Deremensis can be very picky about the laying site, a trick some use is to actually pre-dig her egg laying tunnels, quite a few people have had good luck using that technique.

When I saw the last picture my immediate thought was "no way!" lol. Thanks for sharing!!

Thanks for the advice! I believe I read something like this in an article in Herpnation (searching quickly...) -> yes, Herpnation, issue 3 2010. It's a great article written by Luis C. Wiedemann and Dr. Nicolá Lutzmann :) Anyway, I'll definitely keep it in mind and make sure there's a pre-dug hole in her substrate when she's ready!

Wow, that last photo really is amazing. Great timing! And congratulations on the mating. They're a great species!

That last pic is unbelievable! Good luck on the breeding project, please keep us posted:)

Your deremensis are gorgeous! Congrats on the mating. Thanks for sharing you pictures. I too love the tail shot. :)
